Does 'coupling' degrade?

Steve, that what's called blowing through the converter. I've noticed almost all of them do it at one point or another. My cousins truck used to do it real bad with a stock charger and a Precision ML. I can get mine to do it with the 1058, but it has to be at the right point in the powerband. I think it's something in the Allison programming that wont let the TCC lock when it sees certain parameters. If I push the lockup button when it's happening the lockup is hard and barks the tires.

I wish that was what is going on, but it's not:( if I hit a bump at wot, the rear end gets "light" or un settled, and the tach just about red lines and you can feel the power fall off, and the tire aren't spinning:hug: but I wish they were:rofl:

I made a thread about this a few years ago. It's like the truck hits neutral for a second. Freaks me out when it happens. I try not to go WOT when I know the road is shitty.

Mine did it with my 1057 and now with a brand new Precesion high stall it does it too. I think this is normal and is more pronounced at higher power levels. I can hit a sweetspot in the throttle and carry my truck up to around 80mph without the converter locking and the power just blowing through the converter. Pretty much the same with both converters I have experience with.

Another member brought up this exact issue a while ago and I have experienced it also. Theres a place close to home that has a rise in the road that will lighten my truck enough to barely loose traction at around 80-100 mph. I think I remember Mike L. chiming in and saying the trans either unlocks the converter or goes to neutral briefly when the tires spin at high speeds. Although you dont think the tires arent spinning, they probaly lose just enough traction to cause the issue. Your not going to hear them squall at that speed.

A BT lock up box will solve the blowing thru converter problem, worked for me, when my truck was stock with a big tune i would use the nitrous and it would blow thru the converter.. As soon jason put some moon shine tunes in my current set up it started blowing thru the converter.. I heard when u get around 620-640 rwhp it will do this... Like i said , bens lock up box fixed this and knocked off a couple 10ths at the track..

The lockup box doesn't do anything for part throttle, which is where this issue occurs mostly. I have one and by the time it happens its too late to push the button. And when you do hit the button, the lockup is violent.

I think the box was designed for WOT apps.. Dont hold me to this but i thought i read in another thread that u can adjust the box to lock up sooner than 95% throttle.. yes, it gives a kick when it locks.. My dodge did the same when it would lock, i didnt have a fancy lock up box on That truck either, Just a good old fashion toggle switch that i had to arm and disarm manually! Ah the good ol' days!

I don't believe you can adjust what throttle position the box locks up at. All you can adjust is the time delay and the ramp up rate of the TCC solenoid (harsh lockup/soft lockup). Those functions are only available if Ben has unlocked the features prior to sending you the box. On all his new boxes, the features are disabled unless you and him had a talk before ordering.

And just like Chris said, if I roll into the throttle and the rpm picks up and I manually lock my converter, it is harsh and will bark the tires.

If I run it in T/H it locks up right away, as well as if I go to WOT, but like Lwatson said if I go 80%-90% I can take the thing to 80mph in 5th on the on-ramp of the freeway without getting lock until I let out of the throttle a little more.

After the replys in this thread, is there any converter this doesn't happen with?

Thanks for the info guys(Chris, Landon, Ryan) good to know I am not the only one having this issue, and it seems almost to be the "norm"

I did kinda think it was a safety feature of the trans for a while, cuz it did almost seem like it was protecting itself, and has never gotten worse, or led to any other problems. So seeing that posted in the link that Chris provided hit home a little.

I did see that it seemed to happen to trucks running 620+whp:D
