I don't think it does. You're telling us that an inherent design of a piston engine is to blame for diesel rattle? Then why doesn't a diesel engine converted to CNG or propane rattle? They run the same stroke/bore, and even more compression than a gasoline engine due to available higher octane.

If that were true every engine with similar Stroke, Rod length, and CH would rattle. Diesels rattle from delayed ignition timing of the fuel mostly, causeing variances in pressure in the chamber.

I have no clue what causes the rattle but an old gas engine sounds somewhat like a diesel when it detonates after the ignition being cut off.
