Sorry to hear about this Jason. It does suck to lose a piston. I know the guys at ATP will take good care of you.

Id want to see the file he was running when it broke. Idk anything about Duramaxtuner but guys have made a lot more power for a lot longer time than him without issue on lbz's. Shoot there is a local guy running confederate diesel tunes with a modded vgt and I believe 100% overs and its been running strong for about 2 years now. And it gets ran hard too!

Blaming tuning or tuners can be some of the biggest BS there is. I know of 2 LMM's locally that broke cranks STOCK! I also know a LBZ that dynoed 613 rwhp on Randall's SuperFlow in Gladstone IL with a 74mm turbined s300 66mm comp with a stg 3 Wicked cp3 and 80 over Exergys, stock long block 4 years ago and is still running today, but after that year he went to dual fuellers and a remote mount 2.6"x3" Precision charger and is probably 700-750 rwhp now... I can't believe it is still running, but it is. Always been tuned by DuramaxTuner, by the way...

And just for a reference I tuned on a truck at Randall's before that Made 920+ rwhp on Danville's dyno a week or 2 earlier and only made 840 rwhp on Randall's. And Randall said he's seen similar results across the board...

Also, I have no clue on power level. But my original LLY engine seen self built s475 over stock twins with dual stock fuel pumps and 3200-3400us tune with stock injectors at 26,500 psi rail pressure for over one and a half years...

No-one would blame the tuner if it broke a crank, what are you trying to say with that comparison? That being said obviously duramaxtuner would not be were they were today if they weren't doing something right. Its just a well known fact that tuning is a major contributor to lbz piston failures so a look at the tuning would be a good idea imo...

I'm pretty sure if I tried to tune my truck I would crack a piston... Which is why I don't :D

Thanks for the empathy Josh, ATP will be happy to be rid of me I'm sure, I've been callin poor Dustin everyday this week:eek:
But I just wanna get it right from jump:D

I gotta say thanks again to Dustin for taking the time to let me think out loud and bein there to bounce ideas off of and solidify the plan:thumb:

.....Sorry for my prior rant, and sorry for your luck also. You are in good hands.
No worries man:hug:
I wasn't, and I don't believe anyone was, doing any tuner blaming or bashing, here, 600whp is well into the danger zone on a 150k mile factory build;)

...Its just a well known fact that tuning is a major contributor to lbz piston failures so a look at the tuning would be a good idea imo...

While poor tuning can take out an engine with stock injectors, I never thought poor tuning was the issue, per se, but this recent tune felt really snappy off idle and really powerful on the low end, and the thought had crossed my mind that I got a built engine tune file....
So looking at the tuning wouldn't be such a bad thing, just to see what's what, and to try and know with more certainty what kinda power I was running, since I never made it to the dyno:eek:

I'm not even sure if it's going to be possible to run the old file on the new build, I'm not even sure I care anyways, I care just for the info that could be added to and for the community, that's about it...keep movin forward.:D

Still down, ATP is not doing the build

I'm considering other plans right now, maybe a budget build to free up some of the planned duramax build monies for my new toy? As it was, the build with ATP was met with unforeseen delays, which forced us to take several different actions within our finances and make alternative provisions for events in our personal lives.

1) I was forced to rent a truck to haul our toy hauler to a couple nationals for my older daughters MX persuits (she won world mini's this year!!!) and later we just paid another MX family to haul our trailer for us.

2) the extra downtime didn't play well with our need for transportation, so I bought another rig instead, and while I could've purchased something much cheaper, that's just not my style. Unfortunately, my wife has had her fill of diesels and they are going for an inflated cost around here (as everything seems to) so I didn't get another D-max like I wanted to, but I managed to stay true to Chevrolet and picked up a super clean low mileage 06 AWD TrailBlazer SS.

3) I actually had a down payment on a running low mileage LBZ engine and was planning to throw it in for the time being just to get the truck moving again, and build my broken Engine at a comfortable pace, but it somehow got sold to a local instead...

4) Uncle Sam hit us hard this year and we had to reevaluate what was most important and our immediate goals

5) we are currently looking for a new home and we've had offers on the table, however there's very few homes like what were looking for and we keep getting outbid. Several homes we've been interested in sold or went pending sale within the same day that they were listed, the market around here is absurd.

Due to the fact that we are anticipating moving, Ive held off on the build. I'm planning to pull the engine and do most of it myself when the right time presents itself, but as it would seem, I guess I'm just not supposed to have a built engine right now, lol

The trucks not going anywhere and neither are my desires for a built truck, I've gotten it this far, the engine is really all that's left to tackle, I'm hoping the wait pays off in the end, however long it will be.

Thanks for asking!
I'll update as I make progress, I just don't have any idea as to when that will be?

It ran for about two minutes coasting down from 65mph, ya think the cylinder bore would be ok to slap a new piston in? I can't tear it down and wait on it...
What about stress the crank saw from a cylinder having no pressure

I'm with ya guys, I wanna do it one way or the other. I don't want to "have to" tear back into it before I'm ready tho...

A guy I know did that. Honed the cylinder and put new piston on and it ran great for years till he sold it! And it broke pulling a load over a mountain.

I have helped fix 2 cracked piston engines... 1 LBZ & an LLY. Honed both cylinders with a ball hone, they cleaned right up with minimal honing. Washed the block down and slapped it back together... The LBZ is still running and the Lilly cracked a diff. piston:confused: Bad injectors we are thinking??? Anywho it won't hurt to try and you would at least have your truck back... Don't be Skeered:D

I've honed and put 1 piston in 2 lb7's that ran with a bad injector too long... Both for friends, one was a C4500 that is now a rollback with a 90 hp tune in it, been running for 1.5 years...

Edit: sorry for the novel:rolleyes:

Hey guys-

Thank you very much for getting my attention with this option:hug:
I needed an outside force to get me motivated again.

I have sat in the drivers seat one time since the day it failed and it actually made me kinda sad inside cuz i miss it, it's so nice and I have so much into it; time, money, research, "love" I really do love that truck and I really miss driving it...

I admit I've been pretty narrow minded as to how to fix it, I WANNA BUILD IT UP, I want to have a built engine and 800whp!!! But the time and risk involved in regards to the cost of parts and me assembling it all without a reputable machinist locally available, made the whole idea and task at hand seem daunting and overwhelming. So it's just sat there

I've had several failures occur with this truck from factory parts to my own negligence while trying to attain more power from it, and when the engine failed I'd had it. It couldn't have come at a worse time and I felt pretty much beaten by it and the immediate circumstances prior to the engine failure.

The idea of a single piston replacement was presented to me recently and I had kinda written it off. However with all the feedback here about a piston replacement the fire has definitely been lit:thumb:

Our pursuit to move has me a little put off too, but I don't think we're goin anywhere w/in the next month and it sure would be a great benefit to have the truck running for the move;) and with my luck, as soon as I tear it apart one of our offers will be accepted, so by Murphy's laws, maybe I should tear into it so we can get the house we want and need, lol

My wife would be extremely pleased to have it running again, she misses it too and she would be VERY delighted to not spend the money to build a "race" engine, at least right now anyways, as she knows what my goals/desire for the truck are and I'll keep pushing for it. It would be a whole lot easier to attain piece by piece over a period of time tho, cuz it sure isn't easy to drop $20G on an engine even if you "can" and it surely doesn't feel like a very smart choice either;)

Thanks again for the kick in the butt :D
