So Cal.
I daily drive my 02 gmc, Built motor cast pistons (3-4 times a week, about 70-80 miles each day) i have a little over 4500 miles on the build. I run my race tune on the street about 850rwhp (according to the HP calculators, based upon my race times). Drives GREAT and even do some light towing (2000-4000lbs). Not bad for a 80mm single turbo truck. By the way I have NO timing rattle even in the race tune...:D

so you're tellin me. from a dead stop, un boosted, you can floor board the pedel and your engine wont rattle at all?

Yes that is correct! How ever that is a little hard with a 2 wheel drive truck, unless you just want to do doughnuts for ever....LOL

But Yes Just the normal LB7 engine sound. After about 2500 or so it gets a little louder (pilot injection shutting off).

when i hammer my truck from a dig it'll rattle a little, maybe half way through 1st gear then its gone. everyone i know running a big single has a bit of timing rattle when they punch it from a stop

any reason you think they kept breaking?

Too rapid of a change of RPM. I tried welding them, cutting grooves on the lathe to lay weld into, and all kinds of stuff - there is a thread here all about it. Would last forever if I was babying it but the first time I got on it and it broke the tires loose and flew through the RPM it would break.Went to electric and call it a day.

cut and coated or forged?

They were brand new pistons that we sent to SoCal for cut and coating.

how much rwhp do yalls DD street tunes have? like what power level does your engine constantly take?

My lowest setting was probably about 650 rwhp, but it was very rarely on tha setting - it lived on the top 3, usually the biggest one. It was too fun to break the tires loose from 70+mph and drift corners.

Why would you hammer from a dead stop in the first place? You can either tune it to have the MAF limit the fuel and keep you out of the areas of the timing and (more likely) fuel pressure tables that are causing your rattle when you have little to no boost; or you can drive it with some sense and not hammer it with no boost.

With 100% over injectors and dual CP3s on an 80mm single mine wouldn't rattle on the fuel only set of tunes I had that was MAF limited. They were dumby proof so you could floor it from a stop or no boost and not smoke more than a haze or rattle. I had the same tunes without MAF limiting and then another set for nitrous that weren't MAF limited; it typically had the fuel only tunes without MAF limiting loaded. All you have to do is only give it the throttle and fuel that it currently has the air for (just like the MAF limiting tables would) and it will spool faster and not rattle.

Setting up the MAF limiting tables to limit the fuel enough to keep it from smoking or rattling yet not make it hold the truck back can be tricky and time consuming on a big single truck with big injectors and is even harder when you are remote tuning one instead of being in the driver's seat.

I run a 700hp tune all day everyday... I don't see the need for DSP-5 switches or tow tunes.

I plan to sell mine. All its gunna do is cause trans issues from me clickin the thing back and forth over different tunes.

I still think a tow tune can be better than just running your race tune. One, it keeps me from trying to overdrive the truck up a hill. Two, im not constantly looking at the EGT gauge (which gets old). Three, anyone can drive the rig and i feel comfortable them not hurting it unless they try.

As long as the TBIQ, Base Torque, and TLIQ tables are the same from tune to tune and you are only using PW and timing to change the power the trans doesn't have nearly as hard a time adjusting. I also use TH for hard driving and regular mode for putting around, which helps.

its is but my truck is touchy, specially 3-4th gear. it jsut does not like up shifting that gear. the more power i put to it, the touchier it gets. i use to do the tow/haul deal till i started towing more and my shift would be funky till i was almost done with my trips since i mostly drive the freeway. it always bangs gears when i do that and i hate it as well as the passengers. it likes one tune and one tune only it seems. doesnt bother me as it gives me an excuse to get out of the house for a bit :D

anybody that thinks that dsp5 tunes and tow tune and bla bla bla ruin transmissions need one simple thing, a new TUNER! my truck ranges from ~600hp on the smallest tune to around 1000 on the third tune and probably 1200+ on the biggest( especially with the new triples) and my trans doesnt flare, doesnt shift funny, bang gears, or any other of the funky shit that people talk about. when i went 10.7 last year(htt over gt47), i had ran it in that tune 1 time only before that time. shifts were seemless and smooth all the way down the track. everybody needs to quit blaming the switches and start looking at the root of the problem. :thumb:

when you get to making over 1000 hp the need for a switch is a lot more prevalent, unless you just want to break shit all the time. plus it can be used like nitrous, thats fun as hell

Sorry, Not to cause a pissing match but I run the "big tune" every day when I drive my truck! Every truck i have been in will shift "****ed up" if not drivin hard on the same tune in either tow haul or regular however u beat on your truck. Your truck must be a freak if it shifts perfectly fine from putting around all day in the same tune to drag racing a 10.7 pass. Not saying it isn't possible but that is a freak of a truck for sure!

I can vouch for this. His truck drives like a dream. My truck has always shifted like crap and he let me borrow his ecm when his truck was down and I could not believe the difference. My truck has never run so smooth or shifted perfect everytime.

Can we get back on topic?

So for daily driving:

- No forged pistons
- Dual fuellers can have belt alignment issues

Any rod particulars for daily driving?

HMMM...THAT was entertaining for the few minutes to catch up on the thread! :roflmao:

(I have little knowledge, but I do know one thing: I'd be a pissed off mf too if it happened to me and I would let someone know.)

Now for OT, I haven't built yet. Hopefully will have it done before next racing season is over. Haven't decided on large single or more yet, but it will be DD every day. This is a good thread, and for the most part learn a lot from just reading from what people have done. What works for them and mistakes they have made. Thanks for the input.

Gotta love the internet. That way everyone can talk as big as they want. Back on topic, so according to everyone, hp/tq doesn't matter as much as tuning, and how someone drives it? Why are so many built motors hatching under dd use. Kinda the reason of builing it least for me. Some of this info is interesting.
