I love going out and looking for impossible! Allthough, I had to turn around once last week. It sucks being 1/4 mile or less from freedom with a 5-6' snow drift for at least 1/8 of that mile stopping you! If it wasnt 2AM and I wasnt half lit Ida went for it! I'm glad I thought better of it at the time! Only had to backtrack 5 miles or so.....

Everything covered in ice here today. Power outages everywhere. Including our house. Family and me are at my Mom and Dads. There saying it may not be back on for a couple of days. I hope not.:(

Yeah Ted, the roads up here around Fort Sask are terrible. Imagine 4wd sliding backwards down a hill during shift change. The roads were so icy I couldn't even steer my truck over to the shoulder, I could go lock to lock with no change of direction. Atleast I didn't add any "character" to my truck...this time. :D

Today we got upwards of 12 inches of snow. Yes, UPS was still running. Yes, we're crazy. Yes, people wondered why the heck I was working. Most of the day, if I met a customer, I'd say "SURPRISE!" and we'd get a good laugh.

Here's some pics of what I had to deal with today. I should have taken some pics of some of the walks I had to do today, since I couldnt get down a lot of driveways. Some of those driveways are pretty tiring on 45-year old legs. I stayed on main roads all day, and brought back 46 stops (out of 145). Here's whats really strange: Nothing today bothered me one bit. I must be getting old.

:rofl: Thats very close to what I said after 5pm. My last few "paved" roads were 2-tracks at best.

I was walking back to the truck from a house stop, thats why the door is open.

That new truck actually goes pretty good thru snow. The 800lbs of sand bags really comes in handy.

You guys think it is cold??

This is what I had to do yesterday. I'm the dude pulling the hose.
Remember that river I had to cross on a barge......

Now the only way across is by foot or sled on ice anywhere from 4" to 8" thick. It's about a mile walk in -20F and colder weather-before the windchill of course. Any tools, parts,or supplies are transported to the other side by hand. The "sleighs" are made up from everything from 45 gal drums cut in half to pieces of aluminum bent up on the edges. Our particular sleigh is a 45 gal plastic drum cut down the middle and the ends cut off. A big crazy carpet if you will. I have 60 pieces of equipment over there right now that all need to be maintained.

Notice in the one picture, the welders are moving all of their propane and oxygen bottles across by hand-one at a time!!

I've seen more snow in those pictures than I have in real life - I just can't fathom it. (I'm not kidding either - in my entire life I've seen snow about 3 or 4 times and that includes a trip to Canada and Alaska for my brothers wedding at the end of summer back in 1999)

It's cold in Melbourne Australia when it gets to 32 F........I think we get about 3 or 4 nights a year at that temp - in winter the days are usually mid to high 40's at worst. As for our weather outlook; we are looking at mid 60's through high 80's all week. Christmas day should be fine, sunny and low 80's - perfect for fresh seafood and cold meats and salad for lunch followed by a swim at the beach :)

Cheers
Cindy
