Well i did head gaskets and studs on my lly the past week, its completely back together and ive put around 200 miles on it so far, no more pressurized coolant system thank god! Anyways im all paranoid now after that job haha i let the truck idle after driving for the past hour and a half and i noticed there was a slight haze coming out the stack. It is 38 degrees out here in ohio also. Is that normal? So then i took the oil fill cap and there is a slight bit of smoke coming out, again it is cold outside. So is that normal too? Also there is a metallic rattling noise from the cap only when off. Slight but of oil always has seeped out the pcv hose. I checked compression before i had the heads off and it was all good. Didnt check after though. And the machine shop did do a valve grind and whatnot. Attachedhttps://vimeo.com/113569114 are some vids. What do you guys think? Normal and me being paranoid? Or bad injectors and blowby? https://vimeo.com/113569170 https://vimeo.com/113569238

Sounds like a jackhammer. Did you drop something in there? None of that is normal.

Did you adjust the valves?

Im a certified gm technician, with diesel diag certs...... As being a mechanic for a living and working on so many varieties of engines its hard to know "normal" they are all different. Balance rates are in "spec" theres tsb's for clanking and other "normal" noises for the duramax so its like what do ya do haha my education is far more advanced on diesels than the other techs at work (but thats not saying much) so im on my own. 300 miles on engine since the head gaskets. Still running strong. See the problem is most consumers dont take their diesel to the dealer until it mechanically breaks besides service. And if they did most techs will say its normal especially given the tsb's on these. Cause no flat rate tech wants to tear into the diesels especially for warranty pay

And that noise has to be directly related to something in timing cover. I did have timing cover off too to re seal. But its inaudible once cap is on, if it was so bad you'd think it would resonate past?? Im not sure.

Don't worry, you will find the issue weather it turns out to be a loose bracket or something much bigger cause it's either gunna keep running good or running worse lol

I cant hear the noise video won't play (crappie cell service) but mine has metallic gear noise when the cap is off not sure if that's what your hearing but I was paranoid when I did my first rebuild and pulled the cap off couple other dmaxs and made that same metallic gear noise so like said above run the thing till it breaks :D I'll listen again in the morning when I have service see if sounds the same

Ok thanks y'all, im just super paranoid and im all about fixing a starting issue before it becomes more costly. As it is im scraping pennies after the head gasket job. Haha being 21 with high cost hobbies and more bills than i need gets rough at times

They make that sound when you remove the cap at idle. Ive heard it from everyone I'v done and I alsways take the cap off when i tune one or work on one just to see if there is any excessive blowby.

Ok well im not too concerned on the noise, what about the exhaust hazing and white smoke coming out if the fill tube? Is a little blow by normal on these?

A little blowby is normal. That looked like perhaps a hair more than my LB7 had, but I would not be worried by that.

My truck also has the same gear noise coming from the oil fill tube. I think it is just the gears meshing.

As for the haze on the stack, it is hard to tell if that is just water vapor from it being so cold out, or incomplete combustion. You could stand up there and take a whiff of it. If your eyes don't start watering from the smell of raw diesel, it is probably just water vapor condensing. This coming from a guy who's gone through a few sets of injectors. If your eyes don't water and nose doesn't burn when you stick your face in the exhaust, your injectors still have some life left :roflmao:
