LB7: Best turbo for towing and every day driver

Well I think I am going to start saving my pennies for the twin system. I just make the most sense for my use.

Are there still kits available that make roughly 45lbs? I read some where that the new kits make 65lbs. I wouldn't think my stock head gaskets and head bolts would last long at 65lbs.

Does anyone have any input on this?

get the small kit for daily driving and towing unless you have racing plans. the big kit requires big fuel, big motor build, and big $$$$$

Ya, that was what I was planning on. No racing for me, just towing and right foot flogging.

doubt it , hot pipe would not work , have no clue on the charge pipe .

My Vote is for the HTT. it will do exactly what your looking for.

It will have no problem going past the 500rwhp mark either.

The if you want to mod your truck later you've got a better than stock turbo to start with.

I have spent alot of time working with 02bigstrokin on his lb7 twin setup and I will tell you I will personally never own a set of twins that utilizes the stock lb7 charger. That wastegate setup will haunt you in your dreams. The exhaust housing if just too small to work with trying to make power. I would go with a HTT and if you want to go bigger later you can twin with it very easily.

Hello everyone,

I have been searching around for a good turbo option for my 03 LB7. It does mostly just everyday driving, and towing as a secondary. I usually tow around 10 000 to 12 000 lbs. I am looking for a good turbo to help keep my EGTs under control for weekend flogging, but not give up drivability and towing. I honestly know NOTHING about turbos and looking for some good real world advise.

I have spent alot of time working with 02bigstrokin on his lb7 twin setup and I will tell you I will personally never own a set of twins that utilizes the stock lb7 charger. That wastegate setup will haunt you in your dreams. The exhaust housing if just too small to work with trying to make power. I would go with a HTT and if you want to go bigger later you can twin with it very easily.

i agree when they are bought strictly for performance reasons , but for what the OP has described he would be fine with them i think , but i do agree with the S300 being a far superior setup , i warned Nathan when i was first testing my kit that he may have made his other kits obsolete :rofl:

Its not like the VVT twins that you bolt on and put a tune in. I would say the best way to get the gates dialed in is to rent a dyno for a day and make a day out of it.

The 3788 is only a little larger than a stock IHI, I have two customers with the 3788's and one makes about 580 RWHP on a Superflow Load Cell.

He seems to be happy with it, however EGT reduction is not much better than stock, my other customer complains of a boost surge at 25 psi and then it goes away after 25 psi. He thinks the turbo may be bad, he is trying to get a replacement from his dealer he bought it from.

I do tune a few 4094 trucks and was very happy with they ran/towed/raced/sled pulled.

IMHO the 4094 is a great all around turbo for the money, I don't have much experience with the HTT's.

i agree when i first tunned my gates it was done on a dyno . i have heard the IHI gate is a pain to tune , luckly you only have to set it once . you have more experience with them than i do , i just know how they run on Dave's ( utahski's ) truck and he has been real happy with them for what he uses the truck for .

yeah i totally agree with this. ihi's suck. i would probably get a htt also. too many people are starting to have hg problems out of 4094's. if you want the best of everything get a set of twins like trents, they obviously are the cats meow.
