Ok, my 05 LLY has developed a H.G. problem I believe:confused: Seems like a common occurance as of lately:( Anyways, The symptoms are, rock solid upper radiator hose, even after truck sits for a day or 2, Using coolant but not leaking anywhere obvious, and sparatic balance rates. The truck has not over heated or even been hot yet and the water pump was replaced 6 months ago. I purchased a set of ARP head studs already and was planning on pulling my motor and changing the H.G's and installing the studs. Here's my dilema, I do not want the truck to be down for more then a few days right now. It's my understanding that I need to remove the old heads and get the head surface checked and possibly milled before deciding on which grade H.G's I need?? There are no Diesel performance shops locally to my knowledge. I tried contacting a local engine shop and they wanted nothing to do with modifying/milling or keying anything on my Duramax Engine.. So going back to keeping down time to a minimun I have to decide if I 1. make other transportation arrangements for a couple weeks and send my heads out to So-Cal, merchant, etc, to be checked and possibly milled. Or 2. I found a complete LLY engine locally for 4k with 50k on it. I am going to look at it tomorrow (monday) and my thought is, buy it, switch the motors out over a weekend, and build my current motor as time and $$ allows. If I decide to swap motor's should I attempt to install the ARP's one at a time in the new motor, with the motor out? Or just leave good enough alone and keep the ARP's for the future build? Or just say screw the second motor an invest the 4k into my current motor (Rod's, cut piston's, keyed cam/crank, etc..)??? Obviously not all for 4k but its a good start.. Oppinions and suggestions greatly appreciated

Also while I am asking questions? Who all sell's the EGR delete kits on here? I know turbobuick was for awhile but I have not seen him on here lately?? Or is this something I can do myself with a welder, a little improvising and some creativity?? Seems like this would be a good time to get it done:hello:

Rick D lance sells a egr delete kit

I didn't do any thing other than check to make sure the heads were not warped
and just put it back together

Put the heads on a flat surface and check with a light:) Easy and cheap!

check piston potrusion and decide on gaskets after both of these test.

If the heads are infact warped,Get them fixxed! If you cant check how bad they are and run appropiate clearance if possible

How common is warpping of heads?

How do you check for piston protusion?

Well depends on tuning and cyl press

and biggest thing is how long you leave it with a blown gasket

Piston potrusion is checked with a tool that mounts to the block with a magnet(not always) and has a needle type dohicky that shows the nummber on a digital scale:)

Not the best description but im sure its in the tool section on this site

X2 on proper tuning saving the motor from further damage.

A simple magnetic base and dial indicator from Harbor Freight. I think I spent $23. My 14 y/o "Ben-clone" son figured out how to do it before I did.

Tom the sad thing with LLYs is that you think stock is safe!

JMHO but stock tuning on a lly is less to be desired!!!!!!!! Ive seen 3:1 DP added with low timing = suck!

Personally with my LLY ive blown 3 gaskets with stock tuning! (5 total)I know many disagree,But when you read there posts and have actually felt the pain...you tend to fell different;)

Ben will probably post in this thread that LLYs are the best! BUT i personally hate them , Just SIMONS opinion:D

Thank you to everyone for this fantastic information. Here's my next list of Headgasket questions 101. Once the heads are off, what questions are needed to be ask of the machine shop to ensure proper gasket replacement? What are the chances that I will not need to do any work to the heads, Have notice hard rad hose for about a month or two, but very little driving has been done in that time? No hard driving either.

I will shoot him a P.M., as that is who I originally spoke with on the EGR Delete, Just have not seen him around for awhile.

What do you guys mean by check them with a light? Are you saying they will be noticably warped by eye sight? My buisness partner has one of those dial indicator thingy's for piston protution:D Maybe I will just order a couple different set's to minimize down time?

is your plan to get a couple different gasket sets? I'm with you, as I need to limit down time.

C's are the thickest ones? If I don't touch the heads, why not replace what was one thier? (Other then the fact that they blew?)

C's are the thickest

You can put what was already on there.
If you are running a big tune it wont hurt to drop the compression a bit

the C's will drop your compression a little bit but you cant tell
