Anybody try a sump in the stock fuel tank????

I'm tired of the 'draw-straw' issues! I'm working on a sump set-up to feed/flood fuel to the lift pumps. Has anybody ever installed a bulkhead fitting through the tank or installed a sump kit???
I am concerned about getting a good tight seal and not having any leaks. I think that a nylon washer on the bulkhead fitting 'might' seal.............but................????
Any suggestions??

Obviously, this is not needed for a 500hp truck. But most everyone I know with duel-fuelers and big sticks are using a fuel cell now. I don't want to have to do that.

I have been saying this since I first heard of the draw straw issue ;)

All you need is a cup that can hold enough fuel until the fuel sloshing back can make it back to the cup and refill. Like the factory pickup...

IMO a straw going to the bottom of the tank itself is an idiotic idea, lol.

Hellman unit is nice, but to pricey for me, I went with a 10 AN bulkhead in my 98, only thing I would recommend that I've seen some people neglect, make sure you have a ball valve installed in your line as soon as you can.

when i pull the line to change inline filter i have before the lift pump, i just use some line clamps to stop it from emptying the tank .

I got mine for 150.00 because a few of us did a group buy so far out of the 3 dmax that are running them local all of us have been very happy . i can run at the strip with 1/4 tank without sucking air , and have ran it to E with out issue . Matt saw the same results , he moniters his lift pump pressure and said he didnt gain any more pressure over the Socal un it but has seen alot less fluctuation and air sucking ,before the gravity feed he said it would go to zero all the time( intermittently from air ) now it never goes below 3psi .this is on a 800 hp truck with dual fuelers and big injectors .

I've noticed mostly people with FASS/AIR DOG have the problem, and people with the 1792 dont seem to have many problems? Anyone else concur that?

only the FASS with filters , the pump only never gave me problems . wich the pump only would be identical install as the 1792 ( inline ) .

Thanks for the info Trent. I remember seeing the sump years-ago on Diesel Innovations site. I never thought I would need to do anymore to my fuel supply set-up.....................but, here we go again!:D
I run twin Laing pumps and they just DO-NOT like the straw! They have worked great until recently(mo-powa'), but I am in the process of lowering the pumps to keep them flooded and I'm going to a sump.
I started this thread looking for thoughts on sealing a bulkhead through the tank...........but I might go-ahead and do the Hellmann sump. It is a 'we-bit' pricey though.

I have been working on this issue in my head for 2 weeks since Jewell called me after we did the pick-up change.
I have a different idea for a "sump" that I will test on his truck-if hes willing:D and let you know how it goes. This new sump in this thread is a good start but I feel its too small. You guys need something bigger and with a return to the actual sump below fuel level to get rid of foaming. The good ole traditional racing sump wolud be a better idea as you can get them with 1 to 3 lines. Make one source, one return and one for a drain. Just trying to figure out how to keep the tension on the springs but let the fuel module set inside the sump.

I was worried about having problems but mine works just fine. I just ran it down to empty yesterday and put in 25.3 gallons. I usually run it down pretty low and have not had any problems that I have noticed, but I am not at that high of a power level...
