Another pump bites the dust

Fwiw I've had a psc pump for about 3 years and I run 35s. It's still running fine. But I can't do any of that 1 finger turning while stopped. And the steering is still weak while stopped. Sometimes won't tie the wheels while stopped. Have to get rolling a little bit. Which can be annoying. Also have a huge power steering cooler

Thanks for the input. Wish there wasn't so much BS surrounding certain parts. Glad to know all these trucks steer like shit when stationary. That doesnt make sense but you know what I mean

I don't even try to turn mine at a stop, that's why I lost a couple pumps on the LLY, it'd puss me off it wouldn't turn so I'd stand on the brakes and gas and make it turn, it's hard on these pumps.

I ran a large cooler on my LLY, while it didn't help it steer any better, it made the pump last longer from keeping it cooler.

I decided that's what happened to this one the other day, it got hot and boiled the fluid. It's been fine since, but I know it won't be long til it gives out now too.

So I'm gonna put another 6x8" cooler on this truck instead of the GM gas truck cooler that ms on it and try another pump. After some reading and thinking, a good gear box would help more than anything, something with a lower worm gear

What fluid is everyone running? I started using AW32 hydro oil a few years ago in all my trucks including the wife's 07 Tahoe. They all steer better but most likely due to high mileage on the old fluid. The biggest thing I have noticed is how consistent the steering effort is from a cold 8f start to 95f summer heat.

My 06 3500 was noisy when warm before I flushed it but now it has been quiet.

Broken shafts are usually from high rpms and hitting the steering on its stops.

no dickheadedness intended, but wouldn't you expect PSC to require some sort of verification the issue is with the pump? Not saying it isn't the pump, but typically without proof manufacturers want the part back first or else they'd lose too much moolah

I understand what you're saying and completely agree but when everything points to a weak PS pump there really is much more to talk about other than send the pump back to us we will gladly check it out for you instead he wanted me to rig up some gauges to test pressure to and from lock to lock from the PS pump I'm sorry but i don't have time for that and he/PSC was already telling me that it has to be something else that took out the PS pump there is no way the pump could just up and fail in that short of time

I put the PSC pump on last. Could a new hydro booster and new gear box from AC delco take out a brand new PSC PS pump in 5k miles? I still drive the truck but it was nothing like the first few thousand miles now it takes a lot of effort to turn the wheel also whines when turning the brake pedal is softer and when driven a long continuous straight distance you will have no PS and there will be a lot of feedback in the brake pedal and the steering wheel for the first few stop and go's

I would destroy power ateering fluid fast. Psc recommended redline synthetic. Tried it. Cooked it pretty fast too. And I have maybe an 8x8 cooler. Now I run dex 6 or transynd. Seems to hold up better

I'm going to swap my trans cooler with mikes and use my trans cooler for the power steering

I had bad luck running dex6 in cold weather but haven't tried transynd. I have run dex3 in the past with no issue but AW32 hyd oil has been the best for me so far.
The problem with power steering fluid is there really isn't any solid specs. looking at msds sheets you can find some are just hyd oil but not always the same viscosity

I've ran dex 3, brake fluid, synthetic power steering fluid, and regular shit.

The synthetic was a joke, trans fluid sucked and brake fluid cooked the whole system.

I think I'll try the hydraulic fluid next, can't hurt anything, i need a pump and a steering box now as it is.

I can turn my 37s from a stand still in a parking lot with one hand. The only time I have a hard time is when I'm backing my trailer in and I'm on the brakes hard while trying to turn. Before this fluid, there was no doing this. I hate sounding like one of those guys who says one fluid is better than another but I've personally seen a real world difference for me so I keep running it

Brock, I think I'm gonna go with a redhead. Not sure yet though, that one ol boy with the built chevy in D.C. Says he loves his psc box but the one he gots pretty pricey. May get it because I know it steers easier and is less turns lock to lock.

I'm not ****ing with mine. It started leaking at 60k miles, I used some conditioner and fixed that and now at 90k it's got a decent amount of play out of nowhere, and it looks harder to rebuild than the older ones.

My power steering in this 05 was loud as hell and very weak. Brakes sucked and steering pretty much only worked if I was moving. I flushed with Valvoline p.s. fluid until I got clean oil and it got better but was still loud and weak. Because I'm cheap and lazy I flushed it again with a quart of some old Lucas p.s. mechanic in a bottle I found in a buddy's shop. Didn't expect much but even after 4 months and 10k miles it is still much quieter and works decent.
