bumping this one back up,

does anyone know how this (using thicker oil, 50 weight?) will effect the piston oil squirters? will they start spraying sooner?

and, how about the oil filter pressure bypass? because of the higher pressure will it be open longer thus letting more crap circulate rather than going through the filter?

thicker oil has no affect on when the squirters open. they still open at 27-29psi. i have 15w-40 in my truck and at 70mph and 2100rpm, im at 65psi where the bypass is open for miles and miles at a time. i have had no issues.

EDIT: i think alot of this thread is based off old info before oil coolers were really brought to light about idle pressure and cruise pressure

what i was getting at is if it is building pressure sooner will the squirters also be squiting sooner, ie: lower rpm? and can this be beneficial to keeping the pistons cooler or is it more likely to shock them with cooler oil and make it worse?

good point, didn't think about that

I'm pretty sure you are at 30psi by 1200rpm or less depend on temp. 50w might gain ya 100rpm? Dunno but it's kinda splitting hairs

it was more of a curiosity so no biggy. just didn't see any mention of it earlier in the thread

The oil filter internal bypass is for too high of differential pressure (clogged filter), not total oil pressure.

yes, but a thicker oil could manifest as a (partially) clogged filter, couldn't it?

i would guess that at running temps it would flow through fine but during warm up it would remain open for longer, thus less filtration

just fyi, when i was talking about oil pressure bypass, i was talking about at the pump. it will pop long before the filter will.

Maybe in a very cold climate, but it's only a 5w difference between the two.

Mine doesn’t make 30 psi until 1500 or better. I can’t get mine over 45-50 tops at 3,000 rpms, it’s always been this way and I lost 2-5 psi after I got it back together, pisses me off I didn’t swap the pump now, can’t upload the pick but my truck is at 35 psi at 1700 rpm and 38-40 at 2000 rpm

uuuhhh thats not good Reger. factory spec is 42psi at 1800rpm with engine at full temp.

what did they set your bearing clearances at? or did they not mess with them?

Never touched them, this motor has had shit for oil pressure since 10k miles, I’ve lost a total of 5-7 psi since then. I lost 3-5 since the new pistons but I’m running Napa Dino oil and filter instead of amsoil and ac delco until I’ve put 500 miles on it.

How do I read oil pressure with my autocal?

no idea, i dont mess with autocals. shouldnt matter what oil you run, pressure should be better. running a thicker oil that the engine has not been setup for will just create more heat from it being restricted and eventually make it heat up more than the lighter oil and drop viscosity so dont try a thicker oil. gives more pressure when cold but thats it.

Didnt loose an oil squirter did it? put them all back in right?

No, crank or nothing came out, just swapped pistons. Like a said that pressure has always been low, Dave went to amsoil at 4,000 miles and was burning oil until 15-17k, I’m wondering if that didn’t hurt something back then.

I we would do a oil sample. If it checks out good then check main bearings.

I want to say my LMM is right around these levels.. I will check on the way home. 205k on the motor

My built motor does that too, especially when the engine is heat soaked (towing up a hill), but it is also starting at the factory spec'd pressures, so not as concerning.

Mine drops almost the width of the needle every time the turbo spoils, the bigger the tune the worse it is, prolly did it before just didn’t notice
