x2. A double-cardan is your friend...I have one on the rear driveshaft of my Beetle and it works fine.

Yep, I always figured a regualr U-joint past 15 degrees of movement is asking for a short life. And more than 20 and it's only a matter of time. Think about how much the joint speeds up and slows down rapidly as it goes through it's elptical motion. HIGH-ANGLE DRIVELINE is who you need to call when you start lifting up on 38's and up for short wheel base.
