    Remanufactured motor

I guess you missed the part where coolant was not only getting into the oil, but also the cylinders. I took the heads to the machine shop and upon handing them over I noticed where some pitting had occurred between water jacket and one of the valves. This explains the coolant getting into the...

    Remanufactured motor

Yep, I plan on checking each cylinder with a sonic tester to ensure the cylinder walls have the right thickness. A bent rod has crossed my mind. You think I'll notice if the rod is bent by simply turning the crankshaft and observing each cylinder? I'm really hoping the machine shop is able to...

    Remanufactured motor

When I was attempting to do a compression check, I saw what appeared to be coolant coming from the front two cylinders. It was not a lot though. I'm still confused on how coolant was coming out of the tail pipe in the form of raw coolant instead of white smoke. It's got to be a dead cylinder...

    Remanufactured motor

Any other checks? Besides checking the block for cracks and ensuring the surface is extrememly clean prior to installation of the heads, are there any other checks I can perform prior to installing the heads? I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to the internal parts of the motor, so I'm...

    Remanufactured motor

I did check the tranny before I purchased the truck and it seemed to shift ok. The truck was running horrible so I wasn't able to take it out of the neighborhood and I really didnt want to because of the condition of the oil. I just wanted to verify the tranny worked before purchasing the...

    Remanufactured motor

What would you do? Ok, I got the heads off today and I didn't see any cracks in the head or block. However, I did find some interesting things. The HGs have + .010 overbore stamped on them. While doing leak down test, cylinder # 7 had a small amount of air coming out the exhaust. On this same...

    Remanufactured motor

I decided to go ahead and replace the HGs on this truck and after removing the exhaust manifolds, I turned the truck over to see if any coolant was coming out of the cylinders. The two front cylinders on each bank had coolant coming out of them. I'll be pulling the heads soon, but I just wanted...

    Remanufactured motor

That's what I'm thinking. Might as well do the job right and not worry about it

Where did you purchase the GM refurbished engine for that price?

Butchered was probably the wrong word. He just left a lot of things disconnected and didn't put things like the TCM back where they belonged.

Makes sense to me and I'm definitely headed in that direction. I just hope they ship yo Hawaii!

    My new hobby

I would love to tear it down, but I don't have that kind of time. I'm going to either replace the HGs and cross my fingers, or just put a reman motor in there that has a warranty on it. If I get a reman motor, I'm probably just going to keep my block and rebuild it over time for learning...

    My new hobby

There are too many codes too list. The previous guy who worked on this truck butchered it. Wires were dangling everywhere. I'm thinking this has something to do with all the codes. I confirmed either HG or cracked block yesterday because coolant was dripping out of the tailpipe. I actually have...

    Remanufactured motor

I'm not sure how long it's been mixing. That's what concerns me. I didn't look at the oil pressure so I'm not sure. I ran it just long enough to make sure the transmission worked and made sure I didn't hear any knocking. Definitely wished I would have looked at the pressure though.

    Remanufactured motor

Yep, just trying to avoid unnecessary work because time is not on my side. The bottom end will not be easy to see if damaged has occurred. Sure, I can check compression or do a leak down test, but the bearings is what I'm the most concerned about. Unfortunately, you can't see those. It's just a...

    Remanufactured motor

82k, and what's the reasoning for pulling the motor to do the HG job ? I Can see what I need to see with the heads off right? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here.

    Remanufactured motor

I'm definitely going to look into this. That's the best warranty I have seen yet and at a fair price too.

    Remanufactured motor

You're right, however, who's to say the bottom end doesn't fall apart within a couple of weeks after the shop replaces the HG? It has nothing to do with the work they did so it's now on me. I didn't mention that the coolant has mixed with the oil in the first post so I'm sure that changes how...

    Remanufactured motor

Oh, and one very important thing I forgot to mention is the coolant has mixed with the oil so that is why I'm really concerned about the condition of the bottom end. I feel like I'm taking a big risk just doing the HG because I don't know how long this truck has been driven in it's current...

    Remanufactured motor

Ok, thank you everybody for your comments. today was day 1 of working on the truck and within 10 minutes of pulling into the bay, I noticed coolant dripping from the exhaust. I would say that confirms a HG issue or possible crack in the block. I spent the majority of the day getting everything...
