The facts are:
1. The Racor coalescer has 4 micron filter media with a very good single pass filtration efficiency. Arguably the best filter media available for a balance between filtration, dirt holding capacity, and flow rate.
2. The Racor is physically larger than the plastic Wix and has thinner outer walls (metal vs plastic).

Ask yourself: if the Racor has the best synthetic micro glass filter media on the open market (balance of all factors above) and has a larger internal volume of filter media... How can the Wix possibly match the Racor in flow rate, filtration ability, and dirt holding capacity?

The answer is it can't. The Wix is cutting corners in one or more of those areas.

Plus Mike said it choked his LML. Why buy one if it's actually more expensive?

As for other filters like the Donaldson 3micron or the cat 2 micron, they make sacrifices too. Both the Donaldson and cat may match the racor in flow rate and beat it in filtering ability, but neither one will make it 30k miles in the same conditions as the racor without clogging. A lot of people judge the Cat filters to be worth it, since they may be found cheaper and filter to 2 microns. That's your call really, and may depend on how cheap you can get the other filters.

Cat's research has shown the majority of injector system wear is caused by particles in the 7 micron range, and all the filters mentioned in this thread are well under that threshold.
