Strange Failure

Did not know if you figured out what caused the failure. Just a strange thought as to what could cause a failure like that.

Looking at the way the piston is cracked, was thinking that it could be failure due to high rpm cut out. Position of the crank would be about mid stroke(should be the fastest the piston will be traveling).

Aluminum fatigue or just outright failure? Like you stated, its not in an area where you would suspect failure.

Small update:

The failure appears to have originated in the oil gallery. This is based on the "aging" of the broken part at the oil gallery. Although the crack propagated to the ring insert, the crack there was "new" and not the starting point. The crack in the oil gallery extends for a ways around the piston beyond the part that broke free. The crack that continues is highlighted in the attached picture as well as the initiating point. These extended oil gallery cracks taper off going to the left in the picture and do not make it all the way to the ring insert.

It is not clear if it was induced by stress or was some sort of casting flaw. The gallery crack appears to have been three legged. One vertical leg and two horizontal meeting within the left highlighted area in the picture.

Received this picture of a FORGED piston.

I am told all eight look about the same. I hope to have them in hand soon. My initial thought is that this is a similar failure as the previous. I'll know more when I see the piston(s).

That's possible. I tend to think it was something with the build, since All eight popped at the same time. But I'll wait to see the pistons first. Rings and skirts will tell the tale. Builder is experienced and has many many engines out there doing good things.
