Is it possible to tell year model of engine from engine number?

As the title suggests, Is it possible to tell what year model my engine is from reading the engine number? Or is there another way of telling what year model my engine is?

I know its an LMM, but because I bought it second hand I don't know what vehicle it came from and don't have the vin number from the original vehicle either. If i cant find out what year model it is it doesn't really matter I was just curious to see what year model it is.

Had a look and I don't seem to have anything written on the rocker covers. Or are you meaning somewhere else?

No its wired and run as an lbz with an lbz ecm and os.

On the adapter plate facing back, somewhat close to the oil filter there is a flat spot with some numbers usually on there. It's the last 8 of the vin.

We stamp the vin on the motor and the trans at the plant on the motor line. Most of them will be around the starter area and as said oil filter side. The machine I ran stamped the motor and trans at the same time and I used the starter hole to locate it.

Can you use this # to find out when the block was made or assembled?

With the last 8 of the VIN GM can tell you pretty much EVERYTHING about it, what options it had, and where and when it was made.

Yes if I have atleast the last 8 of a vin I can run a vin check on that. If by chance it comes up with 2 vins most the time you can check both one with beca car then the diesel.

There normally done better then that one with a machine that does a bunch of small dot marks. That there was done by hand we do that at the plant if the motor that was built was dropped at the end of the line or if something else happened to it then we would add the vin by hand. Also at the dealer if the rear adapter was replaced that must do the vin by hand.

Hhhhmmmm well mine doesn't have any numbers on that plate where PANCHORFO has numbers and I can't see anything on the starter motor side cause it's all in the way.

Oh well spose I should of looked when the engine was out.

Or is it just to identify the engine?

Henry.... off subject.... but can you get the engine miles or hours from a truck that only has the ecm,tcm,bcm no dic installed? I bought a wrecked truck with a low mile engine and would like to check to see if the miles were as advertised. I tried once with a techII and couldn't get em. Is it possible to retrive from ecm or bcm?

We use the last 8 of the vin on the build sheet when se build each car and truck at the plant. Along with those numbers and a few others tell us what parts go to what cars.

Only what was last on it if it was serviced at a dealer.

Is it possible to tell year model of engine from engine number?
