The stock crank snout has a tolerance/variance in size. The damper is factory bored for the smallest the crank can be, which makes it next to impossible to press fit if your crank is the largest it can be.
Talking to ATI (and then SoCal, who designed it), they say that you usually don't have to hone it. You DO have to use the install tool or it will want to go on crooked and get all fouled up.
We ended up having to lightly hone the one going on to my brother's motor.
