I'm studying so I can get my 3rd class steam ticket, and I'm stumped. I have to solve the following:

y(1+3x)+[3x(x-y)-{-2(x-1)+3x2}-y]

Bold "2" is supposed to be superscript, should be x squared I think. It's been so long since I've done this. Thanks.

My book says the answer is 2x-2, how did they get that?

-3x^2+3 (x-y) x+2 (x-1) + (3x+1) y-y


answer would be
2 (x-1)

Now then, can you figure it out from there?

the 3x^2 cancel out...3xy cancel out...the y cancel out...their's your answer!

yup...once you factor everything out, you get...

a^2+4a+4 - 6a^2-10a-4...then simply add for the answer of...

-5a^2+14a+8...

easy one, its all about simplifying....

(a+2)^2 - (2a-4) (3a+1)

and you get

-5a^2+14a+8
I did it a little diff. than Ralph. lol

then simplify,
2x-2
Basically you just distribute and simplify

So while I could answer these questions, I'd have to bill you time and materials...

(a+b)^2 = a^2+2ab+b^2
(a+b)(x+y) = ax+bx+ay+by

I think I see what you're trying to say, using the formulas that nosliw posted I ended up with a^2+4a+4 - 6a^2-10a-4. Then the - 6a^2 and the a^2 combine to make -5a^2, am I right so far? Then I added the 4a to the 10a and that gave me -5a^2+14a, so far so good? I am left with 4- (-4) which = +8. That makes -5a^2+14a+8. Is my thought process correct on this?
