I'm not seeing the where +4a -10a = 14a.... I get that to be -6a???
Here's how I did it and get the right answer....
(a+2)^2 - (2a-4)(3a+1)
distribute that minus I have in bold and get the following:
(a+2)^2 + (-2a+4)(3a+1)
working it out...
a^2+4a+4 - 6a^2+10a+4
do the addition and subtraction of like terms and get:
-5a^2+14a+8

Thanks JoshH, how did you know to multiply the stuff in the parenthesis by -1? Thanks.
Daniel
Like Nathan said, rather than subtracting, you're adding a negative. Since the two sets are multiplied together you can either multiply one set of parethesis by -1 or the whole thing once you've multiplied it together. Thanks JoshH, how did you know to multiply the stuff in the parenthesis by -1? Thanks.
