1st bull and 1st elk. Had I waited I had a way bigger pair come by about and 1.5 hours after but I'm happy. Took him at 7:11 This morning. 150yds quarter away downhill and crap was it windy in our face...luckily it was pretty calm by him. Heart shot him with a 180grn accubond out of a tikka t3 300wsm. He turned towards us ready to run and dropped. Never even knew we were there. Even found the bullet. Stopped right before going through his hide on his right front.View attachment 46704

Thanks, I was pretty stoked about finding the bullet. We thought i missed because it was so windy you couldn't hear the bullet thump him and we didn't see where he went. Heart sank a little until we got him in the binos

Nice bull, congrats!

I have buddies that hunt out West, but I've never made it out there to hunt. Elk sure does taste good.

We have an elk draw here, but I don't apply. Our elk aren't 100%, what I'd consider, fair chase. They're in localized areas, used to people chasing them (photographers, tourists, etc), and then (it used to be anyway) you have to have a guide (usually just a local with land near the elk viewing areas).

I do have an antlered whitetail tag (figure out the net handle yet?) and I got an anterless tag. Our antlerless tags are assigned by application on a first-come-first-serve basis 'til the WMU's (Wildlife Management Unit) set allotment is given out.

I'm only shooting doe anyway. We as a state, and my area in particular, have a high doe:buck ratio.

I'll use my old 1985 smooth bolt Remington Model Seven in 7mm-08 with a 3-9 Leupold on it. It's currently shooting IMR4831 and 120gr Sierras loaded for another of my Model Sevens. But I just got a third Seven set up shooting 0.165" 100yd 3 shot groups with 140's and 4064, after a lot of testing.

Hunting the pets at benezette isn't even a fair hunt, but if you are lucky enough to draw you can kill a 400+ bull.

I wouldn't take pride in a 400"+ bull if it was killed under those circumstances. It's basically like taking a gun to the zoo.

I'd be more proud of a cow elk killed on public land out West. But that's me.

Well we saw now deer, no elk, no nothing yesterday and today. We hunt the biggest area in the state and it's full of elk but after the barrage of gun fire sunday that we heard I think they high tailed it to private land and dense forest. So now need to look into a spot i know a herd is so we can fill 4 cow tags. Problem is we process ourselves and we are out of freezer with mine already. Not a bad problem to have though is suppose

TX of course
That’s what burned me out on hunting. I took at least 6 deer a year plus my mom and dads. We where processing meat in our free time for months. Plus birds and turkeys... we had 4 deep freezes.

Area 7 is littered with them. Bought 30 min after I shot this one 3 monsters walked by at less than 90yds. Easily double his size and they were the last I saw all season

Colorado totally screwed the draw system up this year with no having to front the money. I was hoping to finally draw a deer tag with 8 pref points and still didn't draw due to the number of people that put in for that unit
