^^^ Thats why the constitution doesn't have those "lines" in it. Once you start giving "The Man" lines that can't be crossed... they will never stop. As is already apparent with a lot of things in our country.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

U obviously don't have any family in service

What would u do if they show up at your kids funeral?

^^^ Of which they are already doing. My logic has no problem.

The problem isn't Phelp's right to free speech or his right to make Christians look like idiots. He has those rights.

The question is whether you can use somebodies family as a Soapbox who has nothing to do with your cause. He's not protesting outside a gov't building, a public park, or a military facility. Why? It didn't get enough press. Too much competition from other groups who are exercising their free speech. He had to come up with a way to push past other groups.

Question: Can you just pick anybody out of the blue and force them into the public view just to hawk your wares? The answer should be no. Individual private citizens and families should be protected by the Constitution against those who are nothing but media parasites. You should be able to have some privacy if you are not a "public figure".

Is there ANY right to privacy, and does Phelp's rights override that right to privacy?

Is this the Wave of the Future? Go to weddings and protest. To picnics. To family reunions. Birthday parties. Baptisms. It won't work unless you have a message that makes people shocked or angry though.

NAMBLA (kiddy pron group) protesting at Chucky Cheese, KKK protesting at Bar Mitzfah's, Dope Growers protesting at AA meetings, anything that shocks people bad enough to get a news crew there.

Screw them. Let them protest on their own dime. There are hundreds of legit venues to whine at. Funerals for non-public figures should be off-limits. And kid's birthday parties as well...

They need a beat down .....But that is exactly what they want . They want a violent response so they can sue so they can collect so they can fund more protest hence more violence more sueing more collecting . If they are truly agaisnt gays as they claim then gay and lesbian right groups should start buying up property around each and every member buy their debts and make life a living hell for them . Open a gay church across the street from them . Add them to gay mailing list etc. but do it within the law so they can't sue collect and protest . And if one of them gets violent then they get the same treatment . The lawyers and firms that represent them should also be brought to light it can't be good for buisness .

I can't say I wouldn't step to violence if they did that to one my family but I wish I would have the support that town showed it's fallen hero . May God Bless our Troops

I don't have any family currently in service, that has no bearing on anything.

The cemetary our family is buried at is not public property it is owned by a private company so they would be escorted out for trespassing.

Everyone here is missing the point... if we start limiting ONE group's right to free speech there is no stopping what else they will start limiting.

Actually, you are under the illusion that the right to freedom of speech is absolute. It is not. This is a basic principle of constitutional law. Yelling fire in a crowded theater being the most common example. Hate speech is also significantly restricted by statute, and thus far the fringe, neo-nazi types have not successfully challenged those statutes.

There is also the illusion of "hate speech." You've got all sorts of people that hate all sorts of things.

People in this country really need to grow some thicker skin, everybody gets so offended over meaningless things and have to be politically correct. I really think this country is done for with all the "correctness" that goes on.

You need your head checked!:thumb:

Last I checked, a funeral wasn't a meaningless thing. I agree being politically correct has been taken to the extreme in our country, but not in this example. I have some pretty thick skin and can ignore quite a bit of trash, but not at the funeral of a loved one. That takes freedom of speech well past simple common sense. I don't agree violence against these d-bags is the answer, but I support the guys who block them in the parking lots and what not and try to generally disrupt their inconsiderate BS.

:roflmao:

Dude. DUDE! In the case of Phelps, "illusion" perhaps is a peculiar spin on it considering. That wingnut would be mute if he was forbidden to use the word 'hate'.:D

Phelps needs 'thicker skin', not us. He's that guy who cuts in line at the movies because he's better than you. He needs to grow-the-fk-up and realize that he's not the center of the universe and other people not only exist, but actually have a RIGHT to exist.

You don't have a "right" to be an ahole to your neighbors. In fact, the Bible frowns on it. It's not a free speech issue, it's the manners you were taught in kindergarden that he can't seem to grasp.

Perhaps we need a Constitutional Amendment to permit folk like Phelps and his groupies to have their way:

"You have the right to be a jerk. Anytime. Anywhere. This supercedes all other rights. Farting in an elevator, cutting off people in traffic, urinating in public, failure to bathe, ignoring anniversaries/birthdays, talking on the phone while sitting parked at a green light, eating spaghetti with your hands at a formal dinner, disrepecting elders, talking loudly in the movies, are but just a few examples. Without this freedom, life cannot be sustained on this planet."

Wow. If this conversation were happening face to face right now, I'm pretty sure I would have punched you square in the face for that last comment. The more you spew, the more ignorant you sound. I'm not exactly sure how you can even consider yourself an American when you support pukes like the WBC. If this country is "done for", it is because of people like you.:hifinger:

PC and thick skin have very little to do with it. Hate speech is fairly well defined and is definitely not ignorant, unfortunate or misguided speech. It is however speech that incites others to act harmfully against a protected class. Phelps skirts this issue by saying "god hates fags" instead of "god wants you to kill fags."

I think that this is so close to the line that it would be reasonable to muzzle this idiot without losing any sleep about an erosion of first amendment rights.

Maybe you should read posts... I never once said I supported WBC and their BS. I support the constitution.

And good throw for the "punching me in the face". Just because you don't agree with my opinion you'll "punch me in the face." How old are you 10?

And just an FYI... if that happened in real life I can guarantee I'd knock you down so quick and put you in a choke hold you won't know what happened... I'm 6'6" 275 pounds pal.

But your statement merely shows you are ignorant by not reading my posts after I clearly explained my point is to abide by the constitution of this land.

Show me where I don't have a right to be an "ahole" to my neighbor. Yes Phelps needs to grow up, yes he needs something better to do.

But for the neighbor issue I've got every right to tell a neighbor to Go F himself just like you have the right to tell me to do the same.

I think I'm leaning jon's way. As sick & twisted and "wrong" as the things are that WBC does, it's a devastatingly slippery slope once you start amending the constitution. Just not a wise decision.

I would still probably be of the mentality that I'd either take an asswhipping or some of them would if it were my family member's funeral. Doubt I'd have it in me to resist.

Throwing on the flame suit....

It has nothing to do with free speech.

Phelps could have 50 minion with signs that say "Save Money with AT&T DSL!!" at a private citizen's funeral and it's the same issue.

You have no right to take away folk's privacy for promotional purposes without their permission.

It not his words, it's his actions. It's not speech, it's human dignity.

He uses military funerals simply because he can get more value for his promotional dollar. He's simply a $10 whore.

But ...

Anyone who disrespects the families of dead soldiers is a douche bag.
