Sorry to hear about that Chad.

Big question is why do some go pop and one's like mine are living? Somewhere around 200 1/4 mile passes, 4 sled pulls and the Diesel Power Challenge, daily driven, 25,000 miles ,22,000 with twins. ??????

Take any population of LBZ's trapping over 100 mph on a stock turbo and there will be piston failures. It happens, I think most of us know that.

This is the first LBZ I've tuned that cracked a piston, and I hate to see it just as much as Chad- but we all know the risks involved at this level. All we can do it try to learn from it and make the next guys truck a little safer.

Finger pointing does nothing positive for the sport and dimishes the experience for all involved. Thanks to everyone who decided against placing blame. Chad knows I have his best interests in mind, my services and parts are at his disposal if he decides they'll help.

Im not pointing fingers at all Nick. I think youve done a good part in trying to figure out why these are dying. It was just a joke Im friends with Rob and hes tuned alot of freakishly fast trucks on stock motors. Dont worry I know you are good to Chad :D:hug:

Chad are you going to use LB7/LLY pistons on new motor ?

Best of luck , if you need any help shoot me some #2 and i'll be there in a heartbeat .

This chit happens , no way to know where the HP limit is . Some more some less .

Doubt tuning is involved , just cylinder pressure .

Good Luck with it ,

Johnny

Thanks Johnny,

I know you know how it is... All tuners have had the pleasure of cracking pistons, so I place no blame on anyone. The LBZ piston is just an oddity, and it is hit or miss. My truck had 44K of hard miles, lots of different tunes, some from manufacturers that aren't known the "best" dmax tuning... This is just an issue of having a race tune in, and paying to play. Hopefully have the motor out this afternoon and show you what the damage is.

BTW, I bought a 7400 mile old LBZ motor to run during the interim, as the build is going to take longer than I wanted to be away from my truck, so I will get it transplanted and running and go through with the build at my own pace. It will be badass when I get done though. Alex has been taking pics so I will post up on the teardown.

Nick, you have been great to me, I have no problems with you or your tuning at all as we discussed on the phone. Your tune ran great in my truck, made very fast stock turbo passes and got seriously sick mileage. Now I just need a 85 hp tune to get me by until the other motor is built. Can't afford another down motor...:D

Rob I wished I knew what the issue is...and thanks. I do know my truck had twice the mileage as yours when it let go, so time will tell if it is just dumb luck, shitty pistons or tuning. It was daily driven, pulled my trailer 15,000+ miles at 75-80 hp above stock and had been run at high egt's (~1350-1400) for 5-10 minutes at a time sustained in the desert heat. I by no means have been easy on this truck.
