Water pump spin-off from other thread

So it seems a bunch of 04 LLY's have been eating water pumps.

I'm curious, what were the signs that some of you saw before they went?

I'm still on stock with 55k miles with fingers crossed.

first water pump was just leaking a little, took it to dealer around 35K miles and was replaced under warranty. The 2nd one I started smelling coolant at about 75K miles, smelled it for several weeks before I ever saw a leak. It was only a small leak and just one time on the driveway while idling. It too was replaced under warranty. The dealer even mailed me back the $100 deductable about a month later. Number 3 is holding out so far, but there is only 6K miles on it.

My LLY puked at 80,000. My LB7 puked at around 70,000.

Both times the leak started all of a sudden and created a small puddle under the truck after a hot shut down.

You can run with the res. cap loose, Often this will stop the leak until you can find time to replace the pump. Plan on about 6 hrs. for a first time install.

you already have 80k on your dually....wow seems like you just bought that thing

My 04 LB7 has seen its fair share of pumps.

I wonder if it makes a difference that most of you live in warm climates? Hmmmm...

I haven't heard of any water pumps going around here.

Our LB7 puked at about 80k, so it might have something to do with higher performance.

If you are extending past stock rpm, I suspect that vaporous cavitation will be more destructive. Especially when running higher boost (the CAC can boil the radiator)

I reved the heck out my LB7 with 80K miles and the pump has held up fine.

They fail on stock low rpm trucks to. I guess I am lucky. (Knocks on Wood)

80,000 miles and highly tuned since birth with lots of heavy towing and tons of bad luck, but its still the original water pump, ive probably replaced everything but the pump

Just a quick note that I have come across in my years as a Heavy Equipment Tech, the majority of water pump failures I've seen don't make themselves visible until the truck is shutdown and more often than not, the truck has started to cool down or is cold.

Lots of times I've parked trucks and come out in the morning to find a puddle or a drip coming from the WP.

My dad's 04 LB7 3500 has 101,000 miles on it, so far no problems. Mine only has 17,000 miles on it. Ive only had this truck for two weeks.

My lb7 had about 110k on it and I started to notice after a hard run from 0-100 or so I would get a coolant smell now at 135k if I leave it sitting at an idle I will get a very small puddle under the pump. signs I noticed were the res was pressurized even after being shut down for ten minutes and having to put coolant in it every 3 weeks and having no visible leaks or puddles.

OK help - coolant AGAIN. I came out this morning to find a good half quart under my truck prob, got home last night and was running it hard (i read above high rpm - my limiters are at 4200 and I shift up there sometimes ) Started it up and a steady drip drip drip from it looks like front drivers side of hte motor - is this location of the water pump? I was quite a bit low on Dex and I had just made fluid level perfect about 1000 miles ago when dealing with this last time. I thgouth it was heads but refilled and it stopped - so I thought. I have smelled coolant - it comes out the overflow tube at point and drips into my front passenger wheelwell. But its a pretty good leak from front left of motor - pleaseee say its water pump not HG....?

Thats where mine leaked when my water pump was bad........I smelled coolant for several weeks and I only saw coolant under the truck 1 time, but it wasnt near a quart.

Thanks Larry I just looked in SI and found water pump and evetything - exactly where it is and I saw another thread referring to it leaking onto front diff etc, thats where its at. Hard to judge fluid capacity but it was a good 25' long trail of fluid coming from under teh truck. Ive had a couple drops before from that area, but I have other fluid leakage under there and its hard to tell. From another thread though TxChris said if you have coolant flowing from the overflow your F*cked... I definately have that, prob due to increased RPM, wondering if it can be related to this at all or if its HGs.
