Video- Is this too much shaft play?

Bought a used Silver Bullet, guy said it had 10K on it. It has no axial shaft play, but the radial movement caught my attention. It spins freely in the center, but if I push it to the side it has a decent amount of resistance when I try to spin it. It doesn't look like the wheel touches the housing, but my poor abused stock IHI turbo I took off didn't have any movement at all. Is this normal for a S300 turbo or do I need a rebuild?

kinda what I thought, but this is the first aftermarket turbo I have ever touched with my own two hands. I know a little radial is ok, it is the resistance I feel when pushed to the side that really has me concerned.

I put oil in the oil feed port until it wouldn't take any more. I seems like there is a hair less movement, I still feel the resistance when pushed to the side, but not quite as bad.

Hard to tell, but you're most likely fine. There is a lot of radial play in a turbo. In and out is bad, but the center section has full-floating bearing.

my Ball Bearing turbo moves in and out up and down i thought it wasn't the same for journal bearing turbos?

Well I have had a decent amount of people tell me it is probably fine. I think I'm going to go ahead and put on on tonight at 12:22AM and finally have a real turbo. When I get a chance I think I will take it for a drive to a decent shop and see what they think. If nothing else, I will get pissed and get better at swapping turbos I guess. Do you have to undo the uppipes and take the whole pedestal out to remove an s300 every time or can I just leave the pedestal and take the actual turbo off if I do need to get it worked on?

I talked to a few shops and they said it sounds normal, I went ahead and put it in but now I can't get the truck to start. It cranks but does not fire at all. It is showing a code P1631, I reset it but it keeps coming back every time I try to start it.

I got it going, had to do a passlock reset for some reason. I need to get some pieces to finish up the exhaust in the morning and then I'll be able to go test it out hopefully!

Just the inlet and outlet piping for the compressor, the turbo flange nuts, oil feed line, and the oil drain tube nuts, need to be removed to remove the turbo. All the rest of the stuff stays in place....maybe an hour or so to round trip a turbo that is not hot.

Not sure what everyone else told you about that shaft play, but the general rule that was explained to me is that you should not be able to make the compressor wheel touch the housing. A fair amount of shaft play is required for the hydro-dynamic bearings to work, but there should not be enough play to alow the two pieces to touch. If they do a small amount you will probably be fine-for a while. If they come close, but you cannot hear any scraping sounds from inside the housing you will be fine. If you hear scraping, you will need a re-build shortly. Just my .02.

Our silver bullet has a good bit up, up down side side move ment but no in out, was that way new!

MY BB garrett has a bunch of movement everyway, i was told thats normal for a BB turbo to feel sloppy while not running, i had a new CHRA put in it and it came back the same way!

Thanks for all the input. Seems like the play is normal from what most people say. Got the truck running yesterday and put about a hundred miles on it today. It is a whole different animal now. Sounds sweet, takes off like a jet....I like it...alot! I do have some tuning issues I believe, It feels like I am getting a really hard defuel around 90mph (closed course), the truck falls flat on its face every time I get just past 90. Not showing any codes or anything, and yes I raised the speed limiter. Same tune as I have been using with the stock turbo, and I never had this problem before. It seems like it is fine when I get on it lower than that, but it is hard to tell because it hits 90 pretty quick.

Not sure, just throwing this out there...but maybe adjust the boost tables. Could be defueling because the ECM is seeing higher boost than the boost tables are set at...I know its an LB7, but they are in there. Worth a shot maybe.
