Mansfield Flag Controversy Draws Worldwide Outrage
Carol Cavazos MANSFIELD (CBS 11 News) ―

Is it okay to show your patriotism at the office?

For one Arlington woman, the answer was "no" after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend.

Debbie McLucas is one of four hospital supervisors at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield. Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors.

When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. "I was just totally speechless. I was like, 'You're kidding me,'" McLucas said.

McLucas' husband and sons are former military men. Her daughter is currently serving in Iraq as a combat medic.

Stifling a cry, McLucas said, "I just wonder if all those young men and women over there are really doing this for nothing."

McLucas said the supervisor who complained has been in the United States for 14 years and is formerly from Africa. McLucas said that supervisor took down the flag herself.

"The flag and the pole had been placed on the floor," McLucas said. But McLucas also said hospital higher-ups had told her some patients' families and visitors had also complained.

"I was told it wouldn't matter if it was only one person," she said. "It would have to come down."

McLucas said hospital bosses told her as far as patriotism was concerned, the flag flying outside the hospital building would have to suffice.

"I find it very frightening because if I can't display my flag," McLucas asked, "whatother freedoms will I lose before all is said and done?"

Kindred Healthcare's corporate headquarters are located in Kentucky. We called them for comment when we were first working on this story Tuesday, but they did not return our calls.

Wednesday morning, however, our story received nationwide attention. We have received hundreds of emails and comments from people who had something to say about it.

Among the supporters was a combat medic in Iraq: Debbie McLucas' daughter, Lillian McLucas Dressig. "My mom is a true hero in my book," she said.

It was midnight in Iraq when she spoke to CBS 11. Talking about the stand her mother took which could have cost her job, Lillian said, "If it's the right thing to do, it's the right thing to do. And, I think we need more people to stand up for what's right in America."

Several dozen people protested outside the Mansfield hospital Wednesday. And a receptionist at Kindred's headquarters told us they received many phone calls.

Then, late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."

We talked to McLucas Wednesday afternoon. She says the hospital's local CEO called and apologized. And McLucas says the woman did tell her she could put the flag back up, which she has done.

But she says when she was first told the flag had to go, nobody mentioned anything about its size being the root of the problem.

"At no point was I afforded the opportunity -- [no one said,] 'Hey Deb, could you get a one and a half by three and a half and hang it instead of hanging this three by five?'" McLucas said.

Even so, McLucas says she's happy people have spoken out about the issue. "It's just restored my faith in the American people," she said.

not surprised... one (yes, even just one) minority of any kind whether it's a homo, black, chinese, japanese, indian, native american, etc. can really stir the shit just by complaining about us being even the least bit patriotic IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. Like BombDoc... said, dare someone to say something about a mexican flag or german flag somewhere. The appeasment to the minorities is rediculous and beyond out of control. It's down right sickening. reediculous or not, I find myself literally inraged when I see things like this. Though some type of emotional feeling is appropriate for the things going on, I'm not real sure rage/hatred should be one of them but for the time being, I can't completely supress. For a moment, it sets me right off. So yeah, to say times are sickening to me is quite literal and dissappointing to say the least.

At least she hung it back up. She should have went redneck on the damn african supervisor and introduced her to a nice asswhoopin for F'n with her then sent her ungrateful ass right back to her miserable native country!! I'm serious, GTFO if you don't like it!!

Instead, she probably did it right but not nearly as enjoyable IMO.

If she returned the courtesy to the black woman she would get a EEO write-up and have to deal with HR. That sucks!

Yes I said black. We do not fly other country's flags before our own. So I will not state a continent's name in front of my country's name.

By the way, if you have to be the EEOL or EOR for your business/company making the "If you don't like America; GTFO" statement is a great introduction for the EEOL/EOR course.

That sounds familiar. Heres an email I responded to my HOA after being told to remove my flag from my home last year. They ended up letting me keep it up and said they didnt know it was an "American Flag" that they thought it was an "advertisement"

To whom this concerns,
(which in my opinion, nobody)

I received a letter from the HOA about flying an 'American Flag' on Sept. 11th. The letter stated that we are not allowed to display anything 'on' the front of our homes. For one the flag is not always up as said in letter. It was only up for that day. I only put it up on days I feel necessary, like 4th of July, Veterans Day, etc. I am not gonna go into anything political or patriotic about this situation. Instead I am gonna make this letter very clear and easy to understand.

I have removed my flag and mount from the house. Which I am now in compliance with your by-laws, which are in place for a so-called 'friendly environment'. I now have purchased a Flag pole, in which the bylaws do not state anywhere that I can not have a flag pole in the front of the property. Also, in spite of the meaningless un-necessary act from 'neighbors', or I should say the 'BS from people that can not mind there own business' I have also purchased a bigger flag to fly from my new flag pole.

Further more, I will continue to fly my flag on the days I choose, and if anymore problems arise, I will fly the flag every single day of the year. This is my choice and no HOA board, by-laws, local laws, or state laws, prevent me from doing this.

If my flag continues to 'offend' occupants of our sub-division, feel free to have them contact me on my cell phone anytime they wish; or if I am home, ensure them it is ok to stop by and run their mouth, that would be better for me anyway.

Do not bother replying to this e-mail. Everything that needed to be discussed, has been. Thank you for your time.

Some states are not "right to work" which means in a nut shell they can fire you for ANY reason(Nebraska is this way). I believe in this womans case she did the best thing for right NOW by removing the flag and continuing on having a job. She could have quit, I think there is only a what 10% or something like that unemployment rate, her position would be filled by the end of the day and most likely by someone more qualified for less money. Maybe she should call the ACLU...oh wait she is white so they won't touch this one, if only she was asian with a KKK flag at her desk  You don't have to like it, but it is going to get worse before it gets better.

Let me ask you this, would you strap a 40' long by 15' tall flag on a pole and tote it around at the mall on saturday at noon? Would you tote it to your work during normal business hours? Just curious.

That is taken way out of context. I happen to have an American flag on my hat and shoulder all day at work, I am proud of it. My shop has a Garrison flag hangin in it (50 foot) never comes down. Not bein able to show your patriotism at your place of work is non sence

Something tells me if she had a flag on her shoulder and hat we wouldn't be talking about this and I almost promise you if she flew a flag in her home or on her personal property we wouldn't be having this talk. I also bet if someone at this same place tried to fly a Iran flag and people started to complain, it too would be removed. Point is, if the work finds it as disruptive to the day to day operations there are options but honestly it is a fight that would take millions of people to win. Not saying it is right, but we have to start somewhere. Another large contributing factor here is, she works there and I would imagine supports herself and a family so not complying with a private companies wishes could mean the loss of her job. Again, not saying this is right but that is where america is heading. I for one stay true to my conservative views and practice my right to vote every chance I get.
