Snapped my driveshaft in half on thehighway this morning. :(

Waiting on tow truck now

When it snapped the BRAKE and ABS lights came on

Too dark to see much right now, but any thoughts on what to look for besides half my driveshaft on the side of road?

:( just had new ujoints, and carrier bearing put in. Took it back complaining about vibration at 48 mph. Balanced driveshaft, that helped but vibration was still there. Guess I know something wasn't right for sure now

Which half did it loose?

You might want to check the yolk on the front of the diff for damage as well as the balancer ring attached to it.
Check the rear transmission housing or transfer case.
Fuel tank and exhaust.
Spare tire. Sounds strange, but do not know what path it took when it left and could have punched a hole in the spare. Might also ant to check both rears for damage.

Is it the abs module under there?

so far I have:

Missing rear shaft

Front shaft bent.

Shift cable busted.

Leaking trans fluid from somewhere.

Dent in exhaust pipe.

Did I say uggggggggggggggg?!?!

Good news was I just left home and was only 4 miles down the highway. Tow truck drug both truck + trailer home at same time.

Going to look for other half of driveshaft now

My cousin traded someone a snap on tool box for u joints in his van. One of the cups didn't get put in right and it broke the tail housing, driveshaft, and grabbed the harness to the trans and spun it around till it tore apart. Guys said what warranty! And yes, the ABS module is on the driver side of the inner frame just under the seat area on top of the ABS valve body. Probably just took out the wires (fingers crossed).

Been there before, only i was 6hrs from home.

I'm sure it was just the wires on the ABS, if it did get the brake lines you would know it. Fluid leak could be from the trans lines, can't imagine it would be a cracked case.

looks like connector popped out of abs. module has a doink in it but 'looks' ok

where the front of driveshaft attaches to trans (is that called the yoke?) broke and fluid coming out that seal. Pics loading to photobucket slowly.

What do you think, time to swap out the trans? Ive got a whole trans with under 20k on it in the garage... Or just swap the yoke and seal?

Dealer quoted me about $800 and change for whole driveshaft.

Tony at all season has driveshafts for 4wd in stock, uggg no 2wd

Improper u-joint install I bet. They were probably bound up when installed and the guy didn't know how to tap on them to free them up so he said screw it, it will work itself loose...

Damn. Looks like an issue with the U joints and how they were put in. Looks like the right side let loose first then spun out of the other side... like i said been there.

If you have another trans just put that one in. Better yet call the shop that did the u joints and said they "ballanced" it and have them fix it and put your trans in.

I'd be raising hell had that just happened after getting work done on it.

Man that sucks. If I was closer, I have a 2 piece D/S for a 2WD sitting in my trailer. But, I'm in Alaska. For now. Come this time next year I hope to be in Roberts Wisconsin.

happened to my blue dmax, new u joints. Bone stock truck. Kicked truck down to pass a semi and parts past us both. U joint came out of rear yoke and spun the transfer case on the tail shaft like the drive shaft. Tranny case, transfer case, drive shaft, rear yoke were all trashed.

Vibration was probably from mis-clocking the drive shaft on install. Happens when they don't get the slip joint back together on the two piece shaft. I would have to look again, but I believe the yokes have to be 90 degrees out to run smooth.

Breakage looks like it ejected a cap. Possibly from not getting the cup fully into the saddle and not catching the retaining dog on the yoke. This would also cause vibration, but I think you would have caught it on inspection the first time around.

Cap ejects. Joint shifts to that side, When the cross comes free from the other cup, missing cap side pries the ear of the yoke off.

Bummer. :(

we went back and walked the highway where it snapped and found the rear half of the driveshaft. Aside from the ujoints the shaft itself looks perfect. So, just front shaft twisted.

At the suggestion of 2 local shops I called my ins co. Both shops said, the driveshaft balancing shop said the shaft was dented, so it may have been weakened. Told the ins man the whole story from the june 9th ujoint + carrier bearing replacement up to this mornings carnage. He said he wasn't familiar with commercial policies so he'd have to check, but every other time he's seen something like this, the part that failed is not covered but the collateral damage is. I'd be shocked, but we'll see what happens when adjuster shows

Got under the truck to get it in park and make sure it would start. Noticed orange dust above where the front driveshaft was bent. And there's orange marks on shaft. I think I hit a brick. There was a busted in half brick within feet of where we found the rear driveshaft

Let's rewind to last week before I hooked up to the trailer.

I was supposed to get a trailer going to Quebec Canada. When I got to dispatch office they were scrambling to do my paperwork for the Canada border. we're sorry for the delay, the trailer you were supposed to take had a flat so we swapped you to another trailer. Exact same trailer, going to exact same dealer. No problem I say. Then my truck explodes.

The trailer is sitting in my driveway waiting for someone else to get it and deliver. The other driver calls and says he'll be here Saturday night or Sunday first thing in morning.
The wife and I want to go run some errands Sunday afternoon and he hasn't shown yet so I call him.
He split his hand open and can't drive.
The trailer must be possessed or something. I think I need to drag it out of the driveway but I'm too nervous to hook it to the van
