Twins: why do people move the battery and coolant tank?

So on twins sets, how come everyone moves the battery and the coolant tank. And why do they chop the fender liner? I know this set fits fine!

That's a 2006 LBZ. Have a couple thousand miles on the set now, so far so good!

Not an issue at all. The coolant tank is closer than the battery is. It's going to take a lot of heat for that to become an issue. Although I am not running a crazy tune (I have a stock tranny with a transgo). So far so good!

Agreed!! Acid does wonderful things when it gets hot enough and I don't think I would like to see a battery go boom again (I blew one up as a kid)!!!!

Nothing a heat shield can't take care of IF it ever is an issue. You have to remember stock that the exhaust manifolds are below the battery and much hotter than that turbine housing (yes, I know much farther away). Even the positive cable "cap" hasn't deformed or even got "squishy" after running it hard. With the truck idling (yes I know hardly any heat), I can keep my hand on that turbine housing.

Moving everything obviously isn't required, but it does give you a lot more room to work with.. and more room to work on the turbo setup / engine etc. It's less cluttered without the tank/battery.

I actually think this is less cluttered. I had another brand set under the hood and it was a PITA to do the fuel filter. Plus my cut fender liner made a mess under the hood, eventually sagged into my tires, and got wrecked (and then my air cleaner got really nasty...

I could fit a stock air box, or AFE box, etc with this set up.

I think the least cluttered setup would be a stock fender liner, relocated battery, removed front fuel filter (assuming a filter equipped lift pump)... Removed EGR/GRID etc.

The less shit under the hood the better... I don't have twins, but I have deleted most of the things I just mentioned and it's MUCH less cluttered under my hood.

If you want to jam all that stuff in there, and don't think heat will be a problem- more power too you (not being a smartass). Most would rather get it out from under the hood but if it works, it works :thumb:

How much boost are you making with your setup?

Stock fender liner fits, battery could be moved, I just didn't want to for my truck, fuel filter could be removed as well, but it's better for the engine to have it as close to the CP3 as possible. EGR and grid heater are also completely deleted on this set (no EGR motor housings, no EGR cooler, LB7 up pipe, but the hot pipe will clear a stock pipe with a blocker flange).

I have a stock tranny/TC, so I can't get to full boost (TC slips badddd). But so far I have seen 55 PSI at about 1200*F.

The other thing about keeping the stuff where it is stock, it saves a TON of time on install (and money), plus you don't loose all the coolant. Just some more factors to think about. No set up will ever be "perfect" for everyone, but this set is exactly how I wanted (took me a few tries to get it "right").

i dont think you could do that with an lb7. the intake is further back and you would have to contort the cac pipe to get it around everything. plus i only lost about a gallon of coolant and thats because the kit came with a new tank. and why does the filter have to be as close to the cp3 as possible?

Losing a gallon of coolant isn't bad, my LBZ doesn't have a drain plug though so for me I made a decent mess. Plus there aren't places here that I can dispose of coolant easily, nor did I want to put it back in my system.

i didnt touch my drain plug. a couple of carefully and strategically placed clamps on the 2 hoses coming from the radiator kept my mess to a small puddle

Wait till Ben sees this thread the one on dp got closed but I think mpi has a cleaner kit
But that's me I don't have the factory fuel filter so that's not an issue an I'd rather be safe then sorry with coolant an battery ??

He Has and had posted but I see that it's been cleaned up.

Obvioiusly the size of the turbo/s used will dictate if you have room or not. That looks pretty clean, I too would worry a bit about the heat from the exhaust housing on the battery but a heat shield could be added it looks like. Not much bling but looks pretty functional.:thumb:
