its because turbochargin multiplies air and the stock charger is no longer being fed air by atmospheric pressure. The compressed air being fed through the comp housing of the stock charger is not actually being created by the stock charger. And yes the efficiency of the stock charger goes down as it will not create as much boost as it could by itself.

It is more important to look at the efficiency of the system as a whole. Additionally, we were discussing the flow path of the big charger being obstructed (read: restricted) by the compressor cover of the small charger, that is all.

Also dont forget about the new billet chargers that are out now. They spool much quicker, and seem to work well as singles.

They are coming out with some great singles , but those same turbo's make compounds function even better , so once again the argument continues , IMOP both paths have the benefits and there is no wrong answer , for myself I will always have compounds on my trucks ( twin or triple ) , they continue to do things a single will never achieve , I have a turbo kit that can hit 900 hp on fuel and still drives and spools as fast or faster than stock on my tow truck , and on the Race truck I can make the HP I need which is impossible with a single turbo.

If your worried about running 10's, last thing you should worry about is saving a little money running a single with or without spray! So much more money involved running numbers like that than just bolting on a turbo.

last time i checked, the s475 made 23-25psi before the IHI and combined they made 50-55psi on the big race tune so that would mean the stock IHI is producing 25-27psi which is right at its peak efficiency, if not over a hair.
