I have a 2007.5 lmm and out of no where yesterday, the trans started overheating saying trans hot idle engine. And no matter what I did, it kept doing it. Wasn't pulling any trailers or anything like that. What could be the potential problem?

Could the cooler in the radiator for the trans be clogged with the converter clutch lining?

I'd check with a scan tool as well to see what temp is showing in data. But if your converter was making noise, debris from it can plug a cooler.

I had the same problem when my converter went out. The rad was blocked solid with clutch material. Tried cleaning it out but gave up and bought a complete new rad. Sure freaks you out seeing that temp gauge rise so quickly huh:D

Oh yeah for sure! So you just replaced the torque converter and radiator?

From what I have read, it's not the trans cooler that gets plugged. It's the radiator trans cooler part that gets plugged. And if I remember correctly you need a special machine to flush it out to do a good cleaning.

So you may think the actual cooler itself needs cleaned?

I don't know. We are shooting in the dark over the internet and relying on the information you give us.

Common sense tells me that fluid is not flowing to take away the heat from the trans and something is plugged. But that is just me and I'm not a trans builder.

You're good. I'm not saying you're wrong. Any advice helps. I was thinking the same thing at first but I didn't think that it would get clogged randomly like that.

If your going to pull the lines from the radiator, do not remove both fittings for the trans lines at the same time. The cooler will fall inside the radiator and it will not be fun I have read. There should be clips that you can pull to take the lines out without removing the fittings.

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. So I'll definitely be careful about that. I'll probably get it apart and blow an air hose through the lines and cooler and if shits coming out, I'll just go get a new cooler. Not gunna mess around with cleaning it

From what I remember when talking to Mike L about the converter failing is when it starts to fail, the paper lining or clutch lining starts to come off and plugs the trans cooler in the radiator. So if you were having converter problems like you were saying then this is a possibility.

The trans experts will correct me if I am wrong.

If you do that, you will only be fixing part of the problem not the real problem. Once the converter starts to fail it only a matter of time. If that is your problem....
