Well, I think I have finally reached the point with my job that I am looking for a new career. I have been working for the same company for the past 7 years, and it used to be an awesome place to work. Based off of your 6 month review you were elligable for some pretty reasonable raises. The environment was fun, and the earning potential was awesome. Two years ago this month Uncle Sam came in and regulated the hell out of the industry I am in, and with that our pay raise scale went away. Of course, with this employee's became less motivated to perform at the levels that they were which led to a huge decrease in overall performance from where it was. The companies response was to then lay off 10% of its employees to make up for the loss of profits from decreased productivity. Here we are two years later, and as a manager I am unable to set performance expectations for the people I manage, and litterally unable to fire them if they are producing half of what anyone else is (not that many others are being highly productive without any clear goals or expectations). Needless to say, I now dread going into a job that I once loved because I can't set goals for my employees to strive for. Considering that I minored in Business, this business model makes no sense to me and is on a continuous path to failure. Ok, I'm don't bitching....sorry for that guys, just needed to blow off some steam.
So.....I am looking for some ideas for career choices. This seems like a pretty diverse group so I figure some of you may have some great input on this. I would really enjoy being able to make great money while doing something that is fun and challenging. Obviously being a diesel junkie is an expensive habit so in the end it needs to be somewhat lucrative to help support my addiction. Any great ideas out there?
