Cat is hiring?... Thats funny since they laid off 35%+ of their work force just a few years ago and others were forced to take big pay cuts to keep their jobs. Cat "is" doing better right now because of the Natural Gas drilling going on in Pa, Nd, and other northern states. Last I checked there was nothing going on in Az.

Not only that but operators do not make $50 an hour in Az. Out of state union operators barely make $20 when working in Az. I think its more like $16.

Pipeline is the way to go right now. I know because our company supplies equipment to every major pipeline contractor in the U.S. We have had to turn down rentals because we can barely keep up with what we have out now. We have 150+ buckets out right now at $10k a month rent a piece. Every bucket we get back in gets re-worked, painted and goes out on a truck the following Monday.

Cat is out of track hoes, John Deere, Hitachi, Kamatsu and Volvo are taking advantage of this. We have contrators calling everyday looking for Cat track hoes with a 3rd valve hook up but there are none available.

I would say get hooked up with a good Union Pipeline Contractor. If you would like names/numbers shoot me a pm and I will try to help out.

Finish your Bachelor's then stay a little longer for an MBA (Assuming you work for UoP or similar)

Do your job the best you can and when it is time to move on, do so. But if you can get an MBA paid for by someone else, I would say time well spent.

Good luck in whatever your decision is.

I do work for UoP. Was an awesome place to work up until 2 years ago when the government came in and regulated the hell out of it. I am considering an MBA.

Start a business, grow it and get it rolling then bail out on the other job. DO NOT burn the bridge tho just in case. What I did and never been happier.

On a side note I'm glad tommy has that good paying lineman job lol :woott: he does a good job keeping my bills paid :D

Yea that mine will be running for a long time, they are always hitting new copper veins in that one. It is also one of the largest copper mines in the US. My grandma has been wanting me to move down to morenci for awhile.

The bad thing is there is absolutely nothing in morenci, well a grocery store but thats pretty much it. I always dread the 4-5 times a year I have to go out there. But if the money makes it worth it Id say go for it.

My grandma owns PJs restaurant down there. I go down there to visit her ever couple of months, but don't know if I could ever live in a town that small. The history there is pretty cool though

I went to school to be an aircraft mechanic, don't do that one either!! Crap schedule, an low pay. Unless you know someone at a major airline That can get you in there's no money in it.

Linemans not a bad gig, its not hard to get into if you accept your going to have to travel can work your ass off and want to learn. Theres always going to be a demand for them and a shortage of them for years to come. Its definetely not for everyone though, and definetely a job where you need to earn the trust and respect of the guys you work with or you'll be down the road because there counting on you to keep them out of danger same as you'll be counting on them.

If your dead set on living in one area its tougher since utilities and co-ops are where everybody wants to eventually end up. Line school helps its not necessary but I would recommend it if you want to get into a utility someday since thats the way there leaning, there's quite a few outfits out west its not that hard to get onto but like I said its alot of traveling and living out of a suitcase. I got into a utility right away @20, maxed out I've got my state journeyman card, now I can go get in just about any place in the country I want to thats hiring.

always wanted a Cabaret.. :D:D

For the benifits of course..

Unless you're willing to travel, it doesn't seem there's much money in my field - civil engineering. Not until you're older & make partner at a firm or start your own. Start out pay is crap IMO. Especially for requiring a difficult bachelors degree & two 8-hr exams to be a professional engineer.

I have nestled into an environmental engr firm working in the waste business. LOTS of money spent to enable folks to have somewhere to throw their waste! It's certainly a secure avenue because there's always going to be trash. ;). I've considered seeking other employment but as it is, I love the people I work with/for now, travel is confined to my state & I can pay my bills (though not a lot of extra) but I'd have to travel nation wide to make the good money. Not interested in that w/ the ol lady & I about ready to start a family. :)

Same with mechanical engineering. I got into the nuclear industry and never looked back. Nuke plants are always looking for mechanics, electricians, welders/pipe fitters, operators, engineers, planners, etc.

My firm hired a nuke engr from purdue because he was local & his new wife didn't want to move off which would be required since we are in KY = coal country and nuke might as well be the enemy. Honestly, I think ppl are just afraid of nuke because of ignorance on the danger. Yes, there is danger but there are so many safe guards it's hard to imagine a catastrophe here really. And since the mass population is scared of it, the government keeps it at bay & hard to start a new one so ppl won't get upset.

That's getting a little off topic though. :D

People fear what they don't know. The media scared everybody during Fukushima and now everyone thinks nuclear power is dangerous and evil, which is s far from the truth as you can get. There is some danger in every industry, it's just that some get more attention than others.

Sorry for the derail, back on topic
