Time for a career change

Well, I think I have finally reached the point with my job that I am looking for a new career. I have been working for the same company for the past 7 years, and it used to be an awesome place to work. Based off of your 6 month review you were elligable for some pretty reasonable raises. The environment was fun, and the earning potential was awesome. Two years ago this month Uncle Sam came in and regulated the hell out of the industry I am in, and with that our pay raise scale went away. Of course, with this employee's became less motivated to perform at the levels that they were which led to a huge decrease in overall performance from where it was. The companies response was to then lay off 10% of its employees to make up for the loss of profits from decreased productivity. Here we are two years later, and as a manager I am unable to set performance expectations for the people I manage, and litterally unable to fire them if they are producing half of what anyone else is (not that many others are being highly productive without any clear goals or expectations). Needless to say, I now dread going into a job that I once loved because I can't set goals for my employees to strive for. Considering that I minored in Business, this business model makes no sense to me and is on a continuous path to failure. Ok, I'm don't bitching....sorry for that guys, just needed to blow off some steam.

So.....I am looking for some ideas for career choices. This seems like a pretty diverse group so I figure some of you may have some great input on this. I would really enjoy being able to make great money while doing something that is fun and challenging. Obviously being a diesel junkie is an expensive habit so in the end it needs to be somewhat lucrative to help support my addiction. Any great ideas out there?

I have been trying to remain hopeful, but this has been going on for two years, and I can assure that if Obama gets re-elected these regulations will stay in place for another four years because it was one of his bills that were passed that put these regulations in place.

Even if he doesnt get elected, it will probably take a couple years to reverse some of the damage that has been done. I would agree though to stick it out and kind of see what happens until after the election, that will tell you a lot.

If you want to change, the oilfield has been good to me for the last six years. Lots of change in scenery, good pay and plenty of days off to do what i want in the drilling end. There are many jobs out there involved in the oilfield and most of them are shorthanded in some way in. BUT a lot of my job involves this election too...

Thanks for the ideas guys, I really appreciate it. I am still young (27) so I want to find a long term thing that I enjoy. These are both good ideas

What do you do for work currently? Did I miss it in your first post? Are you contemplating going back to school or no?

I work in the education industry, currently I work for one of the largest online colleges in the world. I am currently going to school and getting my Bachelors in Business Management, and have been a manager here for 6 years. I really enjoy being a manager, I just don't like the fact that I can lead my team to be profitable for my company. I seriously can't even give them a specific quota or expectation to hit for the day, which as the business orientated person that I am, it drives me nuts to see my team not producing what I know they are capable of. On the plus side I get my schooling paid for for free by working here, and I am just about done with my degree. That is why I am looking for another career that I can be in for the long haul, make great money, and have fun doing it, or at least enjoy it.

I have worked in the trucking industry for 7 years now. I am currently running a terminal in Kansas City. Managment pays well and lots of fun. Some travel involved and good people.

Plus there are a lot of different trucking companies out there and most of the big ones like I work for are not going anywhere. Plenty of room for advance as well.

I'm 27 too and have been a lineman for 4 years.. It's dangerous challenging and fun... Lots of overtime to pay for this damn diesel addiction... I would recommend it to anyone...

You know man, I wanted to be a line man for a long time.....but it seems like it is damn near impossible to get with any power company out here. Last time I checked, the waiting list here in az was like 3 years long
