Almost positive you can get it either way. Fwiw If I was to run the 5k again I would gate it to keep dp down and use the standard t3 housing so spoolup isn't slowed

I am doing the same thing with my 76. Very small ex housing so it spools as fast as possible then gate of any excess.

Well- when I went to pull head off, injector #6 bolt was loose. The cup looks kinda funky, and the injector body has alot of carbon build up on it. I pulled head anyway because of the metal dust in comp tester tip. Other than fuel in cylinder, it looked fine. I had to pull motor anyway because upper pan was leaking. I think I'm gonna pull that piston anyway due to where did that metal come from? Do you think I should replace injector to avoid any issues?

can the rear cover come off without wrecking rear main seal?

You should replace the seal if you pull the intermediate plate IMO.. You could be carefull pulling/installing the plate but if you screw the seal up even a little it will leak and is a real PITA to change once the motor is back in the truck.. JMHO....
