I pull a lot of ford cabs so that helps. I i honestly thought it took me longer than that but i kept track of time and thats all it took! Yeah the fuse box and everything is gonna be fun to put back together!

It's actually not that bad going back together. Coming apart is worse..

Pics of your little frame cradle work bench thing? I need one of those

Its actually just a piece of sheet metal laid on 2 pieces of 8×8 that are laid on the frame. Works great though! I lay everything out in the order it came off on the side it came off and it saves a ton of time figuring out where i put stuff. Lol

I wish I'd gone that route now. Practically disassembled the whole front end anyway, and the time spent dropping the trans and t-case is probably a wash in the end. Lesson learned. And hell...when I go back together with it, I'm thinking about doing a cab off and setting engine/trans/tcase on the frame all together.

On another note...found the culprit!

Those wheat thin pistons.

Would have been awesome if they kept the lb7/lly pistons on the lbz rods.

Cylinder wall took a little bit of damage, I'll get a pic in a little bit. Really hard to tell how deep it is. I would think a .020 over would cover it, but I'll see what a machine shop says this week. I'm exploring a couple of other options, one of the complete long blocks from the garage sale, included. I'm about to go clean up the parts explosion from pulling the engine and organize into some tuff boxes so I can get the truck out of the shop.

As far as cams go.... with a Danville 68 Stg2R, would it be worth the money to upgrade to either the Socal 3388 or the Empire Stg 1 AF cam? Above all else, my truck has to be able to tow my trailer when I move every 2-3 years. I want it to be fun as hell, and pretty quick, but if it can't to the trailer a few hundred (or thousand) miles when I need it to, the truck is worthless to me. Obviously tuning would play a big part in that, but the capability must remain.

Socal! IIRC everyone I have been hearing from said they paid for their parts from empire and it took 8 mo or better to get their parts and some never did.

Yeah I read all those posts too. My main question though, was at the 600-700hp level, is it worth it to upgrade the cam over stock?

Only if you want to go AF. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

If I do decide to upgrade the cam, I'll definitely switch to the AF, but I guess I really need to do some serious cam research. I guess the 3388AF would be the only cam I'm really seriously considering, but then again, I could go with the 6480AF and have some growth potential for later with better fueling and a another turbo.

I bought some parts from Andy yesterday, so now I've got a set of carillos, a DP 68 Stg2R, head studs and gaskets on the way. Once I settle in on a machine shop this week I'm going to find out what they think the block will clean up at before I order a set of fingers.

Back to my original reason for posting, I think while it's out I'm going to do Mishimoto silicone rad hose, full EGR delete, y-bridge and intake. I'm looking forward to the chance to clean up the engine bay and rerun some wiring I'd kind of half-assed before.

From what Mark at Danville has told me, the AF cam is pretty critical in attempt to keep the crank from breaking. These engines have terrible harmonics especially at 1600-1800rpms. There isn't any "proof" that this is what causes these cranks to break, but the sheer randomness in regards to what HP they break at hints towards harmonics and what RPM the engine is always ran at.

I'd suggest a new crank if you go to AF

I'm leaning toward buying a new LML keyed crank as it is. I reckon if I'm already investing this much in a build, I 'might as well' throw in a 3388AF.

Are the bearings the same for all years/models of the duramax cranks and rods?

I guess my own list of MAWs is growing by the day.

Might as well do the 3388af cam, and since I'm doing the cam, I should do the springs. And since I'm doing the Socal beehive springs, I might as well do the titanium retainers, right? And the Merchant push rods. Oh, and since I just found these light weight valve rocker bridges, might as well do them, too, right?

This shit is expensive. Too bad horsepower is so addictive

I'm tickled with the 3388 af. Have one in one of my shed hauling rigs. When I built the engine I put same heads injection system, turbo and everything else back on with same tune and there is a significant difference in the way it runs. Smoother and quite a bit more torque in the 1600-2200 range. Got another 3388 for the next build as well

That's great to hear. Any noticeable increase (or decrease...) in the EGTs after the cam? I think I said it before in this thread, but above all else, this truck still has to be able to accomplish the once-every-couple-of-years towing of my HEAVY 52' gooseneck when it comes time to move.

Unfortunately I never really took note of a comparison but socal designed that cam for towing I believe and driving it has made me a believer. For reference this truck always has a 10,000 lb trailer behind it with the empty weight of the rig 22k and loaded exceeds that by quite a bit. Truck is a dedicated towing rig
