So anwhile back I posted a thread asking for info on heads gaskets and replacement etc . Mine ended up being fine was a different issue .

Well now it's my problem unfortunately but as we all know it's prone to happening with the lly

I'm going to tackle it as soon as we move back home , try and save the extra coin because I want to get my trans done . I have no doubt that I can do this all the way up to one question .

On these diesel motors when reaching the point to take off the heads do I have to do any thing with valves ? Do I have to adjust them etc ? I have no experience with valves or correctly adjusting them

So hears the questions

Do heads just come off and go on no valve adjustment needed ?

Do I have to loosen the valves to get the heads off ? These are the only things I'm remotely scared about doing .

That sucks I remember reading that thread and thought you got lucky as hell with not needing gaskets... wonder if your experience was a pre head gasket indication? Sorry to hear thoe.

Heads will need to checked and cleaned. Would have new seals put in since gasket kit comes with them. Always adjust valves when that far in.

If you don't know the answer to these questions you SHOULD NOT be doing this yourself! You have already failed you just don't know it yet.

Not trying to be mean. But you need a reality check.

Completely agreed. If you arent confident mechanically when dealing with these engines, you can get over your head in a hurry, and that would be a shame.

Adjusting valve lash is easy, it's everything else that's involved. Take your time, take pictures if needed and have a good work area to lay parts out. Merchant automotive has kits for doing everything and I recommend spending the money on ARP headstuds, may also be a good time to replace a few other things since you are in there.

Thanks for the replays and I'm not taking anything personally, I have done a lot of work but have never adjusted valves so I just wanted to make sure , I can always have my dad help . So it's basically try and tackle it and learn valve adj or take it to a shop . Like anything I'm going to dig deeper before I yank her apart thank you

Onto this post I'm not taking offense and I know your post meant well I just had a question , I don't think the whole part after saying I'm not trying to be mean needed to be followed up by a reality check , in obviously smart enough to know to ask before doing . Not tearing into and could be reading into this too far but I feel like I came to the right place to ask the question . Just think your planning of words is a little rude . But no harm takin

Your right, my planning of words wasn't good enough, because your still convinced you can do this yourself.

I'm actually trying to help you.

I learned to adjust valves when I was 12 years old or so. And I've screwed up plenty of things since then. Learned a whole LOT since then! If your asking questions like this YOU ARE NOT READY TO REPLACE HEADGASKETS ON A DIESEL ENGINE!!! Or any engine for that matter.

You will learn eventually yes, question is this, do you want your truck to be your test dummy?

I believe I can get to the heads and out it back together . I don't believe I can pull heads do the valves and put that portion together alone (never doing it ) . I'm just simply saying that you could have been nicer in so many words I don't think the way u said it was very polite .

Example I'm not trying to be a jerk but then adding a jerk saying doesn't make it correct . I got your point very clearly but adding you need a reality check isn't very nice is all . Also after reading your response to my response I can see me and you don't agree so let's just end it here no sense in continuing and turning this thread into a blah of arguing . It actually might help someone else at this point with out having to read through four pages or me andnyou arguing . Thanks for your time and I did value your opinion up until the ending

I wasn't trying to be polite. I wasn't trying to be nice. So sounds like we agree.

You still think your lack of knowledge of "valves, and valve lash adjustment" is the only thing keeping you from doing this job correctly. Your not getting it.....

If I said to you, "hey I can drive you somewhere, only I don't know what this round thing is with a horn button on the middle".... Would you explain to me that it's a steering wheel? Or tell me to get in the passenger seat?

Good luck.....

This is the internet. There's no manners here.

Once you get the rods back in and bridges tightened spin the engine a bit and start adjusting in order. When the exhaust valves are getting pressed set the intake to .012 and vice versa. When you're done spin it a few times and check them again.

Good luck.
