If you don't know the answer to these questions you SHOULD NOT be doing this yourself! You have already failed you just don't know it yet.

Not trying to be mean. But you need a reality check.

He needs to understand it's not a one week job or just pull apart and bolt back together.

But, I did my heads at 19 with zero prior diesel experience, hadnt even worked on a gas motor, just knew the basics. Did the job in my father in laws yard with a 9x9 tent.
The forums and a couple local motor heads helped me tremendously and truck was flawless until I cracked the pistons 100k miles later.

OP,

since you are asking about how to adjust the valves, i can only assume you were not going to have the heads checked for flatness and cut if needed. i highly suggest you have that done when pulled or you will be right back in your same predicament within the year.

I also suggest you verify what head gasket thickness you have under the heads now and do not put anything thinner in place.

do not reuse your current head bolts

make sure your heads are pressure tested as well to check for leaks. dont be surprised if the machine shop tells you, you need valve guides and/or you need new valve seats cut. specially if they have to take quite a bit off the head to get it back flat

make sure you put the head gasket on correctly (not upside down)

when putting the rocker shaft back on, incrementally tighten down the bolts a few turns then switch to another bolt. even with the valve lash adjusters backed all the way off, they still will depress the valve due to the amount of lift the cam has.

when taking apart, back ALL the valve lash adjusters completely off till they stop

cap off all your fuel lines that are open, you dont want any trash in them

make sure you have new o-rings and seals for everything you are pulling apart. the merchant automotive kit comes pretty damn complete for the top end rebuild.

there is alot to look at and the devil is in the details. good luck and be diligent. DO NOT try to rush this

Also, I used a GM tech manual, there's 4 books in a set, it basically told you how to disassemble and reassemble every part on a 2004.5-2005 GM 2500-3500 truck per GM specs.
I obviously just used it for other bolt specs and valve lash and torque sequences on everything. May be able to find a version online.

If they deck the heads make sure they match the intake

While we're all in here, how much can be taken off the surface of the heads before the intake side needs to be addressed?

i have been able to get the y-bridge on fairly easy still with just .005-.008 taken off. if you go much beyond that, i would have it shaved down.

In my opinion this is the easy way to do them. I used to do them "in cab", but it takes me half the time and much easier on my body this way

Yo homes! What did you end up doing man?

Ended up getting help from a friend ran into a few issues along the way stubborn bolts etc that made the disassembly longer. Bout a fordf250 gasser to drive while we're doing this I haven't been home since I got it pulled down but hoping to get home this weekend . Me n my wife both work out of town all week .ill snag some pics and gotta send the heads to a local shop have checked etc . For some reason it doesn't show me replies on my tablet . Thinking about doing manifolds and pipes while I'm there . Thoughts?

Stock is fine for a stock turbo. Large single, twins, or really high RPMs stiffer springs are a good idea. I would do stronger push rods as well if you upgrade springs though

SoCal has really nice springs that do not require upgraded pushrods. That's where a good spring makes the difference. That's straight from the horses mouth.....

However there chromoly pushrods are very reasonable in price as well.

Yeah for as cheap as pushrods are I wouldn't want a bent one

Exactly ^^^^^

Like anything else things must be upgraded/added accordingly. Sometimes one upgrade requires another.

As for brands, I've installed and personally ran TTS, and Hamilton. Had very good luck with both.

I think SoCal, and Wagler are also great quality pieces though.
