So I went and had some fun tonight. Pulled my trans and tore it down in anticipation for my new stuff to arrive. I'm glad I did it now and not in a week. Now I have additional time to plan for what other parts I need. I built this trans august of 2012 with an off the shelf alligator stage 5 kit...red eagle clutches and kolene steels. April of this year i dropped it and installed an ml PR spring and modified converter flow valve for zero psi drop on lockup. Dropped it again about a month ago and swapped out my precision ml converter for an suncoast 1055. This trans has never once given me an issue, never limped, never hiccuped or anything. Has made a bunch of 12.0 passes and a whole bunch of street abuse. 4wd boosted launches were also part of it. I can't complain...so whatever.





First off, I had some suspicions that my trans wasn't going to be perfect inside so what i found wasn't very suprising. My p2 planet is twisted and my C1/C2 drum is chewed up.









C4 clutches and steels looked great. Not burnt and no hot spots. C5 clutches look brand new as well. Measured them against brand new ones i have here and they both measure .099" thick. Well i got new ones so I might as well throw them in.

C1 clutches looked good to, they are single sided Carbonites (16 of them).

C2 stack had 8 red eagles in it...which is why my drum is chewed up I'm assuming. Thin steels being the culprit.

C3's got a little hot..



C3 steels have hot spots on them as well. None of the clutches had any warping at all. Other than my hub, plant and some burnt clutches, everything else looks perfect.

I've got a whole new gpz refresh kit and billet c2 hub on its way, now I need to source a new c1/c2 hub. I've got a new used planet out of a spare trans my buddy bought so no worries there. I am curious why the planet twisted...I was under the impression that bad tcm tuning played the biggest part in killing the planet. As far as my tcm tuning goes, all I've done is increase shift points to 3700 rpm, increase ramp up rate of the TCC solenoid and changed the new lockup tables so the converter locks when it is supposed to. Other than that, it is factory. Have not touched any shift timing or stuff like that. I should mention that I do alot of rolling burnouts, which is I'm sure another major factor that twisted the planet. (I know i shouldnt do it but it's so fun:D)

Will that planet twist strictly from to much power in conjuntion with a totally stock c2 hub? I wouldn't think that would be my case since I am only about 680 wheel horse. But maybe I have crossed the threshold of "to much power". Or have I already mentioned the culprits of the hub twisting (my own stupidity) :D

So now since I have a billet c2 hub, do I just run another stock p2 planet? Or do I cough up the cash and go billet planet. Also judging by the picture of my twisted planet, would it be considered a "good" core? I am assuming it would be since it hasn't actually broken yet.

Sorry for the long read, thought it was interesting to finally tear my trans down and figured I'd share some "carnage" pics.

Them splines look like crap. It would make me sick to my stomach to let something that looked like that get be me at work. I cnc splines at wor and, there's a fair amount of "chatter" in the splines which is considered a weakness to it. I'd Like to see what a billet pc looks like.

Damn you dont mess around. The c3's that warped in my trans are the non slotted single sided carbonites. Your c3 clutches are different. Be glad you found this stuff now. I may have a line on a drum for you. I will shoot you the number.

Wow looks like you have answers the question at what power level are billet shafts and drums needed.
What dose your truck weigh?

What dose your truck weigh?

My input and output shafts are perfectly fine still. Truck weighs right at 7000 lbs with me in it and half a tank of fuel.

Would it be beneficial to polish the splines before assembly or would you just have to remove too much material?

Andrew more input what do you think is going on here? Have you seen this before?

Twisting the splines on the p2 planet is a common occurance. It is nothing new. This is the result of my lack of knowledge 2 and a half years ago and a shit "trans kit".

They machine the splined part off the stock planetary and install a billet splined snout onto the stock planetary.
