on a secound gear launch on the street i can go to around 18-20 psi and still keep good traction . never got around to testing it at the strip i blew my converter after about 6-7 test launches . no more secound launches for me .

So I shouldnt do it than? How much does it help with traction and 60ft times? Anybody else to 2nd gear launches?

You can launch a lot higher since a lot of the torque is being taken out in 2nd gear. I usually run around 35-38psi, If I go lower traction actually got worse since the tread didn't have a flat footprint if that makes sense.

I did second gear launches while doing dirt drags and it helped a ton, I am alittle scared of using the tune on hard surfaces though. If I remeber correctly a wise old Sheep spoke of converter damage being very likely to happen

I didn't have good luck with second gear launches. As for tire pressure, I had the best luck with around 30 psi in the fronts and 25 psi in the back with the same size tires.

I only use it if the track is very slippery. 30 pounds of boost and 3000 rpm is no problem in 2nd gear. Watch the tranny temps. Co-pilot can throw you into limp with 2nd gear launches.

I do second gear launches at the strip, helped with 60ft times and traction. I launch anywhere between 2000-2500 rpms depending on track prep and hold 24-32psi boost on a launch.

Torque converters hate 2nd gear launches, especially the ATS 5 star from my reports from converter builders. The 5 clutches are too thin and cannot take the additional heat that 2nd gear launches create.
I suggest running Citgo Qautrasyn fluid if you are going to do this as it's the only fluid I have found that will take that heat. Even with the Citgo there is no gaurantee you won't take out your clutches prematurely. Ask yourself if it's worth it.

Reading that and me running a 5 star , maybe I should get some of that fluid in mine . No 2nd gear launchs , but might as well be with all the weight .

Ive been kinda thinking I might already have torque converter issue , bigtime shutter prior to lock up . Still works though . Until it lets loose its all I have .

Maybe this citgo would be a good thing to stick in it or is the damage already done and its too late .

Dont mean to be off topic , but what would be a good converter for me in the futrue here Mike ? Your thoughts ?

If you are worried about breaking stuff, do not run the 2nd launch technique. There have been enough failures to warrant concern. Wendy likes it, Casper does not.

If you do run it, test at "mild" power first, and determine if you want your T/H on or off. Wendy wants it off. It depends on your turbo and converter though.

Where can one locally source Citgo Qautrasyn fluid ? Don't think I want to pay shipping on a huge case of it. What is best way to fill with a new fluid? I have the factory stuff in mine and I'm sure the TC holds a ton of it. How should you go about getting most of factory goo out before using the qausimoto fluid?

The hoot method which is what I have been doing before hoot was born.

I also do second gear launches. As Pat said some trucks like it, some trucks don't. I made 100+ passes last year launching in 2nd and have noticed no ill-affects to my converter or trans. I'm not at all saying that it isn't harder on your converter - there's no way that it couldn't be harder on it. Try to limit your staging time to limit the heat. I launched between 2400-2800 RPM depending on the track and was cutting 1.66 60' times on 285 BFG ATs and 1.5X 60' times on MT ET cheater slicks.

The 2WD LMM we just put on the track seemed to like the 2nd gear launch and it helped him hold traction better. He cut some 1.9 60' times in a fully loaded crew cab with no spring clamps or anything, full weight including: spare tire, tailgate, hard tonneau, sub and amp, bumper, hitch, bed rug, a tool box in the bed, and 22s on the front. Not too bad since I see lighter 4WD guys that cut worse 60's.
