Shaft play in and out should be almost none by feel, so .001-.002". The bearings are self aligning, so if you only grab one end of the turbo you will get some side to side movement... You always want to check side to side by grabbing both ends and moving them in the same direction, also should not feel any movement or very slight .001-.002 ish going of memory here. Another trick is to grab one end of the turbo and try to gently force it to scrap the compressor housing or exhaust housing, showing worn bearings and thrusts. Some slight oil residue in the compressor side is normal, none should be detected in the exhaust side. Meaning it should just be dry soot, no dampness.

Anywho, thats all I can think of this late in the day:D Hopefully it's just a drain back line leaking...

I have heard of some Journal bearing Borgs needing oil restrictors to keep them from puking oil into the exhaust and compressor inlet side. Your sounds external but just something to keep in mind.

Definitely oil all under it hope that's all it is. I'll look at it closer today and get it towed to my buddies tonight and check it out. Hopefully nothing major

I bought the turbo from Evan at limitless only had about 10 miles on it. Are you guys thinking I smoked a turbo? Oil is all underneath it. I feel my return could have easily ruptured I cut the stock tube and connected it with that red high heat hose from napa. Just clamped on the stock return. I just ordered a new t4 gasket and merchant braded return line. I was probably doing 20 mph when I seen the smoke pulled over and shut if off before I even stopped. I wiggled the wheel around and it didn't seem crazy wobbly or anything. And it did have oil pressure still about 40 psi. I can't see popping the turbo when it hasn't even been pushed yet I've had exaust leaks so its not even being fully driven and the biggest tune it's been on was two because the clutch won't hold. I've only barely hit 40 psi with this thing and maybe had 4 or 500 miles on it.

I'll bet it didn't even have that many miles on it. I hope you didn't hurt it already.

there's oil dumping out of my pedastals exhaust leak. I don't know how else it would get in there. The turbo spins when it runs but slowly that would explain the turbo shuttering and all the white smoke

If the turbo isn't draining properly it can leak like you described.

What would be a way to troubleshoot that? Would it have to be disassembled? Doesn't seem sloppy as far as shaft play. I have some exhaust leaks to fix so I'm gonna pull it back off and check it out put on the new return line and all that. I mean it's dumping oil out pretty bad even at an idle. Then I hit my fuel filter on the trailer and drained out about 10 gallons of fuel. Lol bad night.

You can blow some compressed air into the drain after you remove the turbo. There should be no resistance in the air flow going into the drain...

Okay I'll try that. I'd just hate to put it back on and it do the same thing. But i can see the whole return line, might have been seaping but not this amount of oil. It's leaking out of the upper passenger side up pipe at the flange where I have an exaust leak, then down into the valley and out of the valley drain down the back of the motor. All I can do is pull it apart. Back to being patient I need to fix this to break in my clutch to get my tunes updated to Sent Henry back his v2 to get my deposit back lmao.
