If you just run a big tune on the track, that motor will surprise you how long it will live. Ive seen at least 1 stock bottom end LLY with near 900RWHP hook better than 60 times in one season and lived to tell the tale. The rods where bent, but the truck still ran and was still hooking when the built motor went in.

Caleb

You just might be suprised just how quick it will grenade, and how bad the damage will be as well. I have seen at least one LB7 blow a hole through the block at about 550 RWHP after one month. Just sayin, IMO, on my equipment, I like to err on the side of caution, and overbuild what I can.

Would the rods survive better if you went after a higher rpm tune and kept enough fuel out of it in lower rpms to keep peak torque numbers a little lower? Obviously spinning it faster puts stress on the rods as well.. any benefit?

Well man my intentions are to be sitting with twins with a built motor in a few years. I have a bad ass setup for work stock class right now and I'm enjoying winning with no problem at the moment:D.. But the idea of a 366 single would be my small turbo in the future. I don't think I would be able to sleep at night if I put twins on my stock motor judging off of your experience and what I know about crazy low end torque on stock rods.
J just called Dustin to buy my profab up pipes and that should bring down the egts a little.. In the mean time I guess I will stay in the stock class and twin when I build later.. Its just to scetchy for ME to have a 366 under my hood at the moment.. I like winning and hate bent rods...

Judging by everything you've said and what you plan to do with the engine your stock engine is going to be lunched way before "a few years" comes up...

Its your choice...if a built engine is "a few years away", then leave the damn thing alone and forget about doing any further mods. Probably wouldnt hurt to not sled pull it all the time too.

Everyone thinks their truck is fine, and their engine is "a good one" and they think "it cant happen to them"...but you play, you WILL pay...and more often than not, reality kicks you in the butt at the worst time. :(

Im really sorry, I dont mean to be an ass or debbie downer, but its the truth, and Im just warning you.

That sounds more like a tuning issue to me...

could have been, but we dont know where this fella is going to be getting his tuning, reputable place or just an individual whos done a few. as well, IMO it is still just a consensus that the tuning can save rods. in the end there is a required peak cyinder pressure to produce a certain level of power, and at that certain level the rods will give in, no matter how the tune is written. yes, you can spin the engine faster to reduce torque and get to the HP level you want, but then your turbo is going to need to be sized differently, and generally will make it pretty lazy on the botom end, ect ect.

I am with ben on this one, just build it right once, and avoid having to buy a whole new block cause your old one has holes in it. see, i got lucky and just blew head gaskets...but there was alot more getting ready to happen, and i couldnt see until i got into the engine.

i dont know ben mine are still through the roof....

my egt's with my twins get hot on my race tune. Just reaching 1600 when going through the traps. granted its not the 1600 by the 1/8th mile like i saw with the stock turbo but its no where near the 1200 MAX in the 1320 like some people claim.

no boost leaks or exhaust leaks either...

I say go for it but thats just me. I you can accept the fact that your motor WILL blow then why not see how far you can push it. A good used block wont add that much to the cost of a built motor. Just start looking for one now and start saving for a build. When I decided to go past the stock turbo I bought a spare short block and heads before anything else because i knew that the motor could potentially go at any time. And it helps to have a couple extra vehicles laying around. Ive been running some pretty decent power for a stock bottom end and head bolts and so far no issues and I believe that running a "de torqued" tune makes a big difference. And I dont use all the power on tap on the street. But im not saying everybody will see the same results just that its not ALL doom and gloom over 550rwhp. It wont last forever but you can have fun for a little while. And I agree with the people on the conservative side, 550 and up is a big ? and a risk not to be taken lightly. Im not trying to say just let fly and youll be fine, just saying that it is possible.

Well as far as tuning goes, I have Dustin Minturn tuning my girl. From all of his stock trucks that he has tune " to my knoledge " most are still laying down good HP.. He tuned a truck with the same mods as I have but with 100 over injectors, he dynoedd over 600hp on a stock charger. He has pulled tons of times with that tune and it's his daily driver... He assured me that he could make a safe tune with a s366 batmowheel.. My problem is how long it will last if I only use my big tune for pulling..
The guy I mentioned earlier is about to build his motor soon.. I can't wait to get a report of his stock internals to judge off of the shape of my current motor. Sorry for weird grammar issues I'm writing from my phone

Off topic but really? Theres places that have WS classes that allow S300s? Surely not in Ohio, seems too close to Ky for all that nonsense.

I say go for it too. Im getting 60 overs a floor it pump and maybe next year wanting a 66... Also from what that other guy said, we both wanted all the same chargers lol

sounds like you have a knowledgeable tuner. that being given, its kinda just a craps shoot on how long your engine will run. could go for a while, or could let loose on the second pull. you will be better off if you run a lower powered street tune, but start gathering money and parts for the rebuild. :thumb:

Wow around here in WS class your charger wheel better be stock or look stock.. I know you can cram a 2.6 charger in a stock housing but that first pull in WS will be your last.. Modified chargers are kinda "frowned appon" around here in NC..

Depends on what part of NC you pull in. If you pulling with bullfrogjohnsons crowd you better be in the right class. But if you pull up here with us they never open the hood to see what you got in stock or modifed class. If you really think about it we have two RWYB classes: One with out hanging weights and one with hanging weights.

Yeah I feel you on that.. I know if you pull in western NC they check you.. I know they made Jeremiah take off his Turbo inlet mouthpiece to check his wheel.. It's all about where you pull.. I'm planing on going to Morgans corner the 16th for WS.. Just sucks pulling against stock trucks with 700 rwhp..

justin I'll find out how it runs tonight since i got the communication issue fixed. cap'n You should be competitive since a 500rwhp dmax won the last pull there.

That's what I'm told, I talked to Scot Matthews, he came in second place last pull and has been trying to get me to pull there for a while now.. Im in the middle of my Profab manifolds and up pipe install. Should be pulling nicely when I get em on.. It's only my second pull so we will see what the ol girl has got.:D
