Mike any idea on tolerances for this shim. Obviously the thickness needs to be exact or it will alter the desired pressure. What about the i/d & o/d dimensions.

ALso any more reccomendations for other internal mods while i'm at it.

lol, i'm capable of reading

tolerance as in accepted margin of error... like +/- .001

I would keep it at +/- .001 or less on the thickness but the od or id I don't know...never been it the trans.

Got ya.:D My bad. Since the measurements are out to the thousands place usually figure +/- .001 to be on the safe side.

just an fyi i just ordered a pump shim and the tool to install it from suncoast

the shim was like $4 and the tool was $13 i think plus shipping so probably cheaper than you could make one

ok so my complete tranny plans are as follows.... any recomendations would be greatly appreciated

c1-c4 power packs , running just 6 clutches in the c2 (space the rest with stock steels)

transgo shift kit

converter back flow valve

pump shim to up line pressure from 245 to 275psi

and either a precision or suncoast converter. (purple isnt my color)

what kind of power are you wanting it to hold ?

sounds like you have a pretty good list , only problems i see not being addressed are no extra clutches in the c-3's , and not arddessing the c-1 aply plate being to thin to aply even pressure to the the c-1 clutches . but back to my original question , if your not going crazy with power than you would be fine . if you going to 500 or above i would address those issue's .

edit just seen this is an old thread ...

i'm going with alto power packs which addresses both the c1 issue and the c3 issue

also the transgo kit, pump shim, and converter lock up valve and a precision converter

its going to be identical to a suncoast stg 3

meening more clutches in c-3 , and a thicker c-1 apply plate ? the alto's are better clutches but by themselves without more quantity in the c-3 and fixing the c-1 apply plate they wont be to there full potential .

Can't say for sure on the C3, but the Alto clutches do come with a thicker plate for the C1.

c1 has 14 single sided carbon clutches

c3 has an extra clutch and steel , its identical to what your suncoast stage 3 uses IDENTICAL

Why does SunCoast send a C3 piston with their kits?

And I couldn't get all 14 clutches in my C1. I ended up having to leave 1 out to get the proper clearance.

that would be stage 4 your talking about i believe, unless they have changed recently
I don't know. I have only helped with 1 SC install, and I don't remember what all was there as I was mainly working on installing a set of twins when the other guys were working on the trans. I just seem to remember seeing where the III has a modded C3 to fit in extra clutches in there and the IV has that plus a modded C4 to fit extra clutches in there.

good to know... wasnt shure if it was a suncoast part . i bet the power -pack for the c-3's come with a extra clutch and thinner steels also .

the shorter c-3 piston comes in the stage 4 kit , and alows another clutch i beleive .

correct

here is mikes explanation copied and pasted from DP

Suncoast 3 contains 14 Alto C1 one sided clutches with thick apply plate. C2 contains 7 Alto frictions with kolene steels and .200 apply plate, C3 has 5 Alto frictions with kolene steels, and C4 has 6 Alto frictions and kolene steels. Transgo shift kit is included with both filters.

Suncoast 4 has 16 C1 one sided Alto's with custom machined apply and pressure plates. C2 contains 7 Alto frictions and kolene with a wave plate and apply plate. C3 has 6 Alto frictions with kolene steels and .250 apply plate with custom machined apply piston as does C4. A ring gear spacer is supplied to support extra C3 clutch. Transgo shift kit, converter flow valve, and some models get a special C1 dump valve. A pressure regulator spacer is also supplied and both filters.

i think the sc3 may now have a wave plate in the c2 now to slow the c2 coming on in the 3-4 shift where there is the typical "double bang" / tie up that some of the older trannies experienced from increased pressure/ trim valves

anyone feel free to correct me because i only know what i read and try and filter through filth and fact and only retain the later

I see. So a SC III has 1 extra clutch/steel in the C3, and the SC IV has 2 extra clutches/steels in the C3 and 1 extra clutch/steel in the C4?

Makes sense. I wonder why I couldn't fit all 14 Alto clutches in my C1. Does SunCoast do anything to make them fit?
