Problem with work Internet Police!

Well, I have been going to duramaxdiesels & thedieselplace for as long as I have been an employee at my company with no problems. Last week I was brought into the HR department and asked to explain 5 pictures. They were all avatars from either this place or other internet forums. They were avatars with women in bikinis or scantally clad, no nudity. I believe it was a witch hunt seeing as things are slow and they may have been looking to reduce head count. Anyhow, I explained what they were and where they came from. There was no formal displinary action taken. I am now banned from this website at work though Has anyone else ran into this? What is your companies policy? I only access these sites during my breaks and lunch if I eat in.

In Australia most BIG companies have "very strict" internet and email policies. I worked for Fosters (the Australian Beer company) for many many years and over the years their policy got VERY tight.

A number of people were dismissed for sending inappropriate emails and viewing inapproriate websites (ie. Porn, sexist/racist jokes etc).

Each time you log onto your PC/Laptop, you have to agree to the internet and email policy so their is no saying "I didn't know." Their policy detailed that we were permitted to use the internet/email communication for personal use provided it didn't consume company time and the images displayed on your screen were appropriate for the whole office to see.

Because of the very strict Harrassment and Discrimination laws in our country we even had to complete Annual Training on what was appropriate and inappropriate internet/email behaviour.

From experience I never had any problems - I was always able to access any website I wanted whilst at work, although I did have concerns about some of the avatars - not from a "big brother policing" perspective but from a viewing perspective if someone did walk by my desk. That said, I worked in an environment where for 90% of my employment I was the only female in my area, so the bikini clad women wasn't really an issue - for me it was more about the double standard.

That sucks. For a little while at school they blocked DP, DH and this site on me. But eventually they gave them back as Im the only person whos on them in the whole school.

I use IE for work and have Firefox installed for personal browsing. I am running HTTP tunnel client and pay the $4 per month for the high speed service. I set firefox to connect through HTTP tunnel and browse in privacy while at work. Yes, I am sure I am breaking some rule or another, but at least my www traffic is encrypted...

I also have other sites set to not show avatars, and might do it here too, as animated avatars drive me nuts...

Since I move around a fair bit from facility to facility, I have seen the gambit. Everything from "We're watching everything you access" to "We don't care as long as you don't cause a problem." But the most ludicrous policy is the primary company I contract with will not give me access to their system because I am a contractor. Yet that is where all the info is that I need to work with. So I get paper copies of all the information!

Bottom line. They own the connection, they set the rules.

Heard tonight that they caught someone looking up some vulgar stuff on one of the computers here. Now they are going to keep an eye on all of them. I will only get on at my breaks from now on. Not going to lose my job over looking up diesel sites at work.

General Motors doesnt like you online but if your on break its 50/50, But they are looking at what your looking at and can bring you up front and show you a screen shot of it and you can get a few days off or along time off, When I saw the updated rules I got a verizon card and just take my laptop with me and they cant say nothing aslong as im not doing on there time, I also have it on my new smart phone now just getting use to it with the small screen.

me and guys at work all chip in and payed for our own wireless internet at our station, so we just bring in our laptops and use it that way, that way it is not connected in any way to the city network.

I am the internet pOlice at my department. Just remember that everything you do on the work computer can be tracked. HTTP tunnels (VPN's), and Proxy servers and sites show up very easily and then you're in another whole new batch of trouble. If you want to access sites at work my advice would be to bring your own laptop and use a cellular aircard or the internet on your cell phone. Just my .02.
