PPE piston melted

Hello,
I bought a built LLY and didn’t know much about it, it was making around 650hp with 60% overs and a GT42R (76mm) not happy with the power I swapped my 60% overs to 100% overs but I went for a drive before changing my tuning, after a 0-120mph WOT run I melted a piston, and my turbine wheel :( could the tuning have caused this or does it sound like a sticking injector? Or could the melted turbine wheel be from before? It was making around 43 psi
I’m trying to get information what Pistons it has but have no luck contacting PPE, the number on the piston is PR-12228-01

you melted it by making a wot pass without getting a supporting tune. your injectors where spraying 40% more fuel then the tune thought it was.

I understand that..but before the truck was EFI live tuned by ATP it had a PPE xcelerator HOT +2 on level 10 with 60% overs I would think that’s would be worse then this..

That’s not what caused it.

I understand that..but before the truck was EFI live tuned by ATP it had a PPE xcelerator HOT +2 on level 10 with 60% overs I would think that’s would be worse then this..

Do you know how much pulse the tune had? Was it just one or multiple pistons

It was a single piston, the rest look fine..and I didn’t data log to check on pulse width, would it be okay to put a new piston in and leave the other 7 alone?

Depends what pistons they are, now would be a good time to put fingers pistons in and have those injectors checked.

If only one piston is damaged, it sounds like a stuck or malfunctioning injector. You could have them tested (mostly to see how bad the other 7 are), but you're going to want a new set.

If the other pistons are fine, you could replace just the one. You'll want to have that cylinder lightly honed so the new rings will seat. And I would check the exhaust ports on that cylinder for damage from the heat as well.

Not to try and knock Lennie @ DDP, but I had purchased a set of nozzles 4-5 years ago for my old cummins, and they were horrible. Constant black haze of fuel cruising, and if the truck sat for a long time it had alot of white smoke at initial startup (injectors were new not too long before). They wouldnt take them back. I've heard other similar stories. I wouldnt be surprised if you have one bad nozzle from them thats seeping fuel. I'm positive thats what was going on with the set I had bought for my old cummins. Send them off and find out. If they seep fuel try and get some reimbursement.

I’ll knock them. He could have gotten one 500% injector and the rest 100%.

If you melted the turbine, the damage was all your fault for not watching EGTs regardless of tune/injectors.

Unfortunately, the piston cooling and power distribution on a Duramax will never be totally balanced.

Just curious John. Not trying to argue. But say a injector sticks open on opposite side his egt probe is would you still see a spike in the egts? Did not know if the heat would transfer at all. A honest question.

To melt the turbine wheel EGTs would have been extreme. One point to know is how long he had it at wot? Diesels are not meant to floor it and run it for miles at wot. Several things could have caused it but I would bet there was previous damage before this happened.
