Hicksville, Oh
bump for new symptoms!!!!

i have filled up my resovor 2 times now and its empty again when i undo my cap it has alot of pressure on the system even after sitting for a day, and the upper radiator hose stays full and stiff,

but a new symptom popped up yesterday and i didnt notice it untill it did it again today!

once i let the pressure off my system my my truck doesnt smoke any more, usually when i start it, she stays smokin the whole time, today i let the pressure off and started it and after a few minutes for once the smoke stopped!!!!!!

so i let it heat up and took off, blowin heat from my heater, a few miles down the road the heat turned real cold when it got to operating temp 180-190ish, so i shut the heat off, turned it back on then my temp guage went way down, and it started blowin heat, and temp went back up to 180-190!!!!!!! but it kept blowin hot air then went the truck temp got down under like 160 it blew cold air????

i just dont get it!!!!!!

no should i????????? i've kind of concluded it was head gaskets b/c of the heater thing now, i completely filled my resovor up let it run alittle and filled it up again after it went down some, so we will see how long it takes for the light to come on again, but none the less i think im gonna get the gasket set (which is pricey!!!!!) and just do it!!!!!!! cause i dont know what else it could be to make it pressurize like that, and then w/ my heater thing happening, it happened both times i drove my truck today

the heater thing is probably air pockets in the system ... there are different grade thickness gaskets and you wont know till you pull the heads . I would pull glow plugs and check them after letting it sit and leak in cylinder . once you know what cylinder (s) your dealling with , g/p will be wet ,then pull the injector of that cylinder(s) and see if the cup comes with it . when I did mine this way my cup didnt come out we put in new copper gasket on injector and my problem seems to have gone away

Neither mine nor the other pump that I've seen go out and cause these exact same symptoms ever leaked like that. And not all water pumps leak when they go out either.:thumb:

Again I'd strongly suggest you look to the water pump first. I've seen this before on mine and another truck. My brother in law paid a shop to do head gaskets when his did what you said in this post after he argued with me that the pump was brand new so there's no way it was out. After he dropped a healthy chunk of cash and his truck did the same thing, he let me put a $30 water pump on it and low and behold the problem disappeared.

I don't think it is but, as I said earlier, your problem may be the head gaskets.
That being said I'd rather spend an afternoon and $30 on something relatively easy and not need it than dive into the motor and find out later that it only costs a couple dollars and hours to fix.

If it's a bad water pump though, and he's not got any leaks, where's all the coolant/water going that he's pouring through this thing?

While you are that far into it though, I'd recommend changing the water pump regardless. :D It's only a matter of time before it gives up anyways so might as well do it while the engine is out and easy to get to. ;)

And yes, I'd pull the engine to do the head gaskets unless you like standing on your head for extended periods of time and just enjoy hard wrenching in general. It might be doable with the engine still in the truck but it'll be a good bit easier wrenching to pull the engine.

That's if you find that you do in fact need to replace head gaskets.

i have gone through the same problem you going through now and my best advice is get all the parts needed to do cups and head gaskets and start digging.

i would reccomend picking up a few cups just in case you find a few that are in really bad shape (corosion from coolant inside the cup and lots of soot) also dont forget to get all new injector gaskets and o-rings.

if your cups check out to be fine and it is head gaskets go get the head checked to make sure it is not warped from the bad gasket.

Good luck !!!
Let us know what you find.
