think all the uneven corrosion on the pistons could have contributed to the broken crank?

I doubt it,, After seeing how OUT of balance these engines come from GM, I would be very surprised if my balanced motor with melted pistons, was more out of balance....JMHO...
Have you checked to see if all the glow plugs are working? If you don't have a CA emissions truck, burned out glow plugs won't set a CEL. If more than a couple are burned out, I would say that is your problem.

My truck was doing this exact same thing before i put it up for the winter. I had the race tune loaded and was white smoking pretty bad till it warmed up. So i was worried and loaded my towtune and that fixed it no white smoke at all. So i come to the conclusion that it is caused by maybe to much fuel and or timing maybe on the race tune. Load a stock tune or lower hp tune and see if it stops smoking:thumb:
If you need a compression tester I have a brand new one sitting in the garage I could loan you. Or you can get yourself a cheap one from Harbor Freight for around 30 bucks IIRC.. I would start there.....
