i kept thinking you needed to make the turbo "make boost". basically, clamping the vanes down to make a boost number instead of leaving them open and letting drive make the turbo hit a certain amount of boost. at 70% vane position, it would create a bad turbo shuddering at lower rpm and WOT with lots of fuel. steve was just doing as i asked for tuning but i have not played with VGTs enough to know that sucker should be damn near 0% vane at WOT. i was striving for a boost number, not making it run like a fixed vane to hit the number. mark was quick to figure that out over the phone with me lol. had steve open the vanes all the way up and all was good!!!

Gotcha. Mark was nice enough to give me some pointers on vane position as well as while back. I had my stock lly over S475 twin setup tuned pretty well I thought. But with some adjustments that Mark recommend it's even better now.

He definitely knows these vgt turbos inside and out!!

Marks tuning with his turbos is awesome. IIRC, 70% is essentially 100% closed on a standard turbo. I run marks tuning and his standard 72vgt and its an animal.

its the same on his turbos. Steve got his dialed in to the point the spool up test matched really close to what mark had shown (105+* days make lighting a charger hard when it get heat soaked so quick). i seriously loved driving it around after MAF got dialed and spool up was dialed. truck came on fast and even when you hit 10psi with very minimal smoke (just a slight puff initially), the sucker pulled way better than i would have expected.

Spent the day after work yesterday doing tear down. Have to move some things in my side yard to get the hoist out and finish tear down tonight. So far, block looks promising for reuse. No spun bearing, cross hatching still there and no grooves. #1 main bearing is actually in much better shape than #2. Rod bearing didn't spin either or really get that messed up. Owner of the truck shut her down in good time it seems as well as the fact he was under no load too when it happened.

Well shes off to levi. he picked her up last thursday. had some issues with turbo tuning that a quick call to Mark fixed right up. I still wasnt happy with how it was pulling on the big tune so last min we raised shift points from 3450 to 3700. wow did that wake it up! i really want to see how shes gunna run on nitrous. its gunna be a heck of a runner. We are planning on play with it when its cools down and he comes down one weekend for some track time. his goal is to get kicked off the track for running too fast :D

So now onto the next engine. i have an 06 LBZ engine in the garage from another truck out of Show Low (3-4 hours from me). She broke a crank with 175k on her but its not all stock. had a decent stock trans tune and he tows with it quite a bit. tear down will hopefully be today so we know if the block is good. then a mild build will begin if so :woott:

James, was the truck you're working now did it have any modifications, namely a tune and if so how much over stock.?

i figured you would have been the last one to ask that with as much as you search sites :D

So got the rest of the engine torn down. Mains look good. Threw the caps back on and torqued the bolts down to check for out of round or taper and I see no more the .0003 difference in out of round and no taper. All bores are within .0002 of each other as well.

The shitty part is I popped #8 piston out and a lot of ring pieces came with. The oil scraper ring was in about 5 different pieces. Cyl has a few good nicks in it and I'm fairly sure it will need a bore over but I need the machine shop to confirm the current bore size I've measured to see if we have room for honing and if it may come out.

I asked the owner if this engine used oil prior to the crank breaking and he said for the last two years since it was tunes it has used oil and pushed some out the pcv reroute. Well, found that issue lol.

Also have a new lml crank coming that I ordered through my local dealer that will be here next week. They matched part zone price and will have it sooner :D

Off to the machine shop tomorrow to drop it all off :woot:

James as long as the block is going to the machine shop have them ensure the mains are inline with each other.

they already know my list of "checks" lol. they double check my work and i double check theirs. with as good as the bearings on the block side looked and how easy the crank spun over, im not worried about the mains being out of line but thats part of my list for them to check. i am more worried about a fractured block and thats where ill have them spend extra time looking.

How much carbon on the upper cylinders? Ive seen a lot of oil rings busted while being removed if there's a decent ridge of buildup.

very little. i knock the big stuff down to get the pistons out easier. i should have took some pics of the of the ring pieces. you could tell they were rocking around in the groove of the piston by how all the edges of them were worn off. the ring land on the piston didnt look very good either.
