Mine was leaking. Took it all apart and tried to get a new seal at checker and vato zone since it was too late to try a good parts store. FAIL. Put it back together without changing anything and voila it never leaked again.

done recently?

The replacement seal is different than the current one on my truck. I was told this by a napa dealer but didn't beleive him. Went to the chevy dealer and they gave me the same one as the napa dealer. It is different. there is like a metal ring around it. I can't get the dang thing back together now. I can't tightent the nut far enough to get the key and key lock in place. Very frustrating. Is this a recent change. I noticed no one else mentioned the seal they got was considerably different than the one they were replacing. Wish I could upload pictures...can't from work. GM part number 15823962...help.

Twist the nut until its tight by hand, and then back it off to the first square knotch and put the key in and the steel retainer ring and your done:) Oh and make sure the hub is pushed tight against the spindle. just did the seals both sides last weekend along with new pads and rotors

not working

I'm going to try and post pictures. First of both seals, old on left, new on right. Then the old close up and then the new close up. I followed your instructions exactly and can't get it back together. I put it back together with the old seal, no problem. Piece of cake. It's like the new one isn't the right seal but the gm dealer and napa guy both say it is, even though it looks different. It's like now I have a washer in the mix because of the metal ring on the new seal? The inside diameter of the new seal also has metal and does not slide on to spindle. It is a narrower diameter than the old one, using digital calipers at napa dealer, but he thought I could force it on there. I tried tightening up the nut to push the seal on and it just won't go. Here's pictures..I hope.

guess picasa isn't working on this site? Or I did something wrong. Guess you can right click and get the links that way.

Am I calling this part the correct part? It is called an axle shaft seal, right? How come when I go to this website: http://catalog.autopartsgiant.com/item.wws?sku=291-319&itempk=785641&mfr=ACDELCO US&weight=0.50 It says there is only one seal per vehicle for axle shaft seal? Does that make sense? I'm grasping at straws here. It should be an easy job. The old one went back together just fine. I just wish I could get the same seal? Toughest part was breaking free the bolts for the caliper. Had to heat them up..after I broke one of my socket drives.

Got it done. Seal came off in two parts. Didn't really notice the part on the spindle till I read the thread in the link from my previous post. Live and learn I guess. Hardest part of the whole project was getting the dang caliper bolts loose.

Yeah i have heard of guys not getting the entire old seal out and causing it to leak again. But it sounds like you got it figured out. And whatever loctite they use from the factory is some good stuff. Those calliper bolts were a bear for me too.

mine were 3 pcs when i pulled them off the spindle:D the stock style seal is a piece of crap compared to the steel timken style that pounds into the back of the hub

dmaxvaz, Mine actually came apart in 3 parts too. Hopefully this new seal is better. I read a few posts where people were having a re-occurring problem with this leak after replacing the seal. I hope this isn't the case. Although now that I know what I'm doing, it wouldn't take long to replace it again. One question: When filling the differential back up, is there a specific procedure? I filled mine up after I initially had to re-install the old one, took it for a ride. Then when i took it apart again, there didn't seem to be fluid in the axle like when originally pulling the axle. Does it take a while for the fluid to flow down to the axle? My initial ride was only about a mile.

you should fill it up until oil starts dripping out the filler plug hole in the diff cover, and it will take a while for the oil to make it to the bearings in the hubs

I might have missed it but i hope you got the new seal pressed onto the inner seal surface area of the axle housing properly there is a procedure to "setting" the seal and then setting up your preload on the bearings. Finger tight is not really all the info you needed....hope things went well. Recheck your fluid level after a light test drive.

I have the same problem with my 03 duramax, I have just over 420,000 km's now on the truck, 6 months ago we took apart both axles and redid all the bearings and seals, the driver side was not leaking but we did everything. The problem is 6 months later the passanger side is puking oil again, not sure why, teh only think I can think of is the surface that the inner seal surface that the inner seal rides in , the part that is on the diff housing was a bit rusted, I cleaned it up with emery cloth the best I could, is this maybe tearing up the seal? or could it be due to my high km's I have grooves worn into my axle? Someone was telling me there is a GM offset bearinga nd seal kit to move the location of the seals? any ideas? The outer seal (paper) was ripped so I used gaskey silicone on the outers maybe this is the problem?

I noticed my inner seal was leaking on my pass. rear here while back when I did my rear pad and rotor. I didn't have time to do it then... Glad I seen this... Need to get this done ASAP before the new pads/rotor get ruined.
