Installing an engine oil temp gauge, I found this picture in another thread.
I am wondering what size this plug is, my oil temp sender is 1/8" NPT and this plug is much bigger.

I'm assuming that oil is going to come out like a drain plug so I prefer to be ready with the correct adapter to jump up from 1/8 to whatever it might be.

Found these awhile back and do not recall what site, is the plug in the picture you posted before of after the internal cooler?

Edit: Found it, at least one of them....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/63...ion-2001-2004-lb7/294404-oil-temperature.html

The top plug if the oil cooler is set like its bolted to the engine is the hottest possible oil. The bottom plug is after the oil cooler, which we don't care about.

I ended up getting the correct part I needed. I bought the gauge from DetailsUnlimited, he saw the post and contacted me saying he found what I needed and is shipping the part out, I don't know how many people would go out of their way like that these days so I really thank him.

So basically what I'm reading here is its 1/2" NPT

Correct, the allen head is 10mm IIRC. It's a MF'R! It will kick your ass getting it loose. I used 5' of breaker bars and still had to hang off the end of it  Being pipe thread try beating on it a few times with a hammer, that usually helps.

FYI that sensor in that picture is reading oil temp after the oil cooler, not before..:thumb:

Isnt oil that is just coming out of the cooler going directly to the motor? So I would want to read that, unless you know a better spot. The threads I've read everyone agreed that was the best spot

Read oil at hottest point just like coolant..you read coolant temp leaving the engine not at the water pump inlet. Pre oil cooler is hottest you can get unless you mount a bung on the oil pan
I can tell you from experience you can easily over welm the oil cooler with either pure HP or heavy load ;)

The port on the top is pre cooler, the oil flows from the pan thru the oil pick-up, oil pump, down the oil galley into the oil cooler assembly.
Once in the cooler the top port is before the filter or cooler, this is the best place to monitor oil temps.

This is everything I have read so far but Brian said the opposite so I had to get the story straight.
