Oil in coolant

I have oil in the coolant in the motor I just did HG's on. Hoses are soft after sitting, so I don't believe it to be a HG problem. What are my other possible sources? Just the oil cooler? Thoughts?

Engine oil level looks low too. Going to pull the drain plug to be sure I don't have coolant in oil as well. Will report back in a few.

I did not change it, but I did pull it off to replace the o-rings.

Engine oil looks fine.

Coolant smells like trans fluid. Checking that next.

I've only put 5-10 miles on the truck since I got it running again, I hope that's not enough to do any real damage but I'm not going to hold my breath. Left Mike a voicemail and sent him the picture above, will see what he says.

I have an odd feeling this was your issue prior to pulling the engine.....

No but your nasty looking coolant might have been an indication

The coolant didn't look milky and didn't smell like trans fluid like it does now though. I am wondering if the HG/overheating issue pressurized everything enough to cause a crack or break in the trans cooler?

So just a coincidence that the water pump failed at the same time? I understand what you guys are saying, just having trouble reconciling it in my head with the water pump impeller at the same time.

It may have just occurred when you put it back. Just seems strange it started as soon as you got it running. Maybe you bumped the radiator just right

I agree with thunder550. His coolant last time was extremely dark like actual oil in coolant. This is a separate problem that might been caused from the extra pressure of the leaky head gasket.
