Soot. Its harder to clean the oil then get it dirty. Once its dirty it doesnt take one oil change to get it clean again.

You think thats it just soot ? Your probably right but

I could see over time the collection and little dirty oil pockets through out the motor plus whats left in the pan contaminating the fresh oil but I'll bet that if I fill drain ,fill drain, 6 or more times that with in 50 miles my oil will be blacker than Tobys' behind. I wanna believe it's been that way since day one.

Doesn't really matter just curious. You can change the oil in a gasser and it will stay clean for a thousand miles min. In a diesel it wont make it to the end of the driveway. :D

With my original motor the oil turned black on the first flash after a change. I ran my spare motor for two years and the oil stayed way cleaner (not black after 3000 miles).

I put the original back in after doing the head gaskets, and wiping clean the valve cover and the bottom pan when I had it off. Now the oil stays clean like the spare did.

My opinion is that poor service intervals (following the DIC) from prior owners result in varnished internals. Fresh oil gets dirty from that and the 1/3 quart that doesn't drain from the pan.

I use Castrol GTX 15-40 Diesel, Luberfiner Filters and did one treatment of Microlon.

Has anyone tried out the PPE oil centrifuge? I've thought about buying one and running it on my motor. Seems like a great part. I've just never heard of anyone running one. Maybe running it and a good filter would de-soot the motor?

I have the PPE centrifuge and the dual amsoil filter setup on my 04. Seems like nothing will get the soot out of the oil.

It has always turned the oil black in 3,000 miles or less.

I wouldn't say that the ~10,000 mile changes the DIC recommends is a poor service interval. As long as you use the recommended grade of oil or better, that is.

My truck has followed the DIC for over 230,000 of its 270,000 mile life, and oil analysis at ~11k mile changes shows the engine wear is great. As I mentioned above, my oil does get black after the first 1,000 miles, but that's not a problem in any way.

Edit: attached oil analysis report

Dave what does the shear % say for your oil samples? Im sure it's higher than you think. Also, what is the viscosity from the same sample?

Still decent viscosity, but Id change it a bit sooner. Oil is breaking down.
If you look at the other columns on the analysis, they are from the same oil at different miles. The last column was from when it only had 5k on it.

The viscosity at 5k was 73.4 / 13.84, which is only 1.3% better. It was better at 8k than at 5k, so I would guess the measurement error is more than 1%, which would indicate no significant breakdown of viscosity from 5k to 11k miles.

What did really drop off was the TBN, and it dropped like a rock from 10k to 11k. From 5k to 10k it was pretty constant. This kind of backs up the GM default 10k oil change, in my opinion.

I'll just keep doing it when the DIC says, because if my engine is wearing like this after 270k, I am happy. Not that changing it sooner is wrong or anything, I just want to see how long it goes on the factory recommended interval.
